1 Day in Bandon

Hi all,

myself, sister and a friend will be visiting Bandon for one day only,

9/10th may.

I am hoping to locate records and find out which parish in Bandon my g,g,grandpa Mr Denis Cremins/Crimmins was born.

Can you recommend a good place to eat (and drink)finding your ancestors

can be thirsty work!

Thanks

Bandon wouldnt be the best town in Ireland for culinary delights but there is a lovely deli near the shoppping centre which I would rate highly - whether you can sit in and eat I am not sure but their food is lovely (sorry I cannot remember the name). If you had the time, Kinsale is about 15/20 minutes drive and I would recommend Fishy Fishy Cafe (yum yum - but get there before 12 to get the first sitting)....Or head to Clonakilty - some lovely restaurants there also (about 25 mins drive int he other direction from Bandon). Sorry I cannot help more on Bandon itself.

Hi there, I think the place Friendlytips might have been talking about is URRU, it's on the larger of the two rivers running through Bandon. The easiest way to get there is to park in the Riverview Shopping Centre (signposted in town or ask anyone) and you'll see the river, follow the river in the direction it's flowing and URRU is on the right hand side of the street facing the river, there's a banner hanging outside it so you won't miss it. They do really tasty sandwiches, cheese and meat plates and you'll find all sorts of very tasty things to have for a picnic or to bring home for gifts. The coffee is also the best for miles. One word of warning, cheap it isn't but if you're into food I'd highly recommend it. The staff vary in their 'friendliness' the two younger staff (Abby and Rachel) are very warm and friendly though. Here you'll sit at the counter or a shared large table, it's very busy between one and two, getting there at 12.30 might be advisable.

Alternatively there's Da Vida, a newly opened wine bar on the other river, ask anyone and they'll know where it is (down the river bank opposite the Next Door off licence) the wines are lovely, the house organic white is really good, with a choice of sandwiches, wraps, soup etc for lunch and reasonable although not awfully authentic tapas after 5 pm if you need a little sustinance after your searching! Cheaper than URRU but certainly not a gourmet experience in comparison to URRU.

Hope that's helpful, Bandon's unfortunately a bit of a culinary wasteland other than these two for daytime eating.

Another option for food is to go out to Casino House in Kilbrittain. The food is terrific. It's about a 15 minute drive from Bandon. Bandon's been screaming out for a decent restaurant since I moved there in 1980 and, sadly, it still hasnt happened.

Marysma, this is a very useful website for planning trips: www.roadwatch.ie. Just click on the link for Route Planning, type in your origin and destination and it will map the route for you complete with travelling times (which should be taken with a pinch of salt).

Hallo to Cardiff! Are you bracing yourselves for the red invasion?

I checked out the journey on aaroadwatch.ie for you and it says it takes 50 minutes but this route brings you into the city and so expect it to take longer. The easiest way I can suggest is when you get onto the part called the Wilton road, keep going straight until you see a TOP CAR garage on your right and there are traffic lights after that. The aa roadwatch sends you straight on, I suggest going left at these lights, continue straight with the river on your right until you come to a junction whch goes right and turn there for Blarney. That way you avoid the city and it will be easier. There are other ways but way too complicated

I did stay around for it, Friendly. Yes, the Sunday night was mayhem. Town was like Beirut. Glad it's over! Cardiff will be great fun. I'll be away but hopefully will find some way of seeing it.
