May 1

We are renting a car and hoped to be in Massa. We realize that is is a holiday, but wished to see something of Carrara and the area. Will we be able to see any of the quarry? Are there parades or special events scheduled in the province where tourists are welcome to observe?

We are hoping that a kind person would also suggest a place for lunch. A farm or winery would be nice. Thank you.

Assuming you mean 1 May next year?

It's very likely that everything will be closed on 1 May at the Carrara quarries. It's Labour Day here . There will be parades and events in almost every town in the province. One (maybe more) of the bigger ones is listed here: http://www.festivals-of-tuscany.com/.

Every year I recommend a true popular Tuscan festa at Torniella where they provide food for anyone who shows up - lots of fun. Here they are playing and even singing the Internationale http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtMCfS7bGSI - not great art but the real thing nevertheless.

Thanks for the advice. It looks like a lot of fun. We are arriving on a cruise and will be renting a car for 8-9 hours. We were hoping to find an area to visit a little closer, 90 min, from Livorno.
