Oman with kids...

Hi there...we're planning a trip to Oman for about a week or 10 days - from Dec 21st. We have 3 kids, twins aged 6 and a 3.5 year old. Any advice on what we should do and where is a good place to stay for kids? Are apartments are good alternative? Can you recommend any good beach resorts that cater to kids/families? Thanks so much!

Al Waha at the Shangri-La is ideal for families.

I wouldn't recommend any of the hotel apartments. Many of them aren't in foreigner friendly areas (perfectly safe, but crowded, no sidewalks, etc) and I dont think you would have the experience you are looking for.

Shangri-La is always nice, and the kids would certainly enjoy. The hotels up in the city don't have private beaches, so not ideal for kids.

As for what to do... it always depends on interests and personalities. Some of the forts would probably be fun for them!

You might look in the Al Sawadi Beach Resort. It is about 45 min north of Muscat and in front of the Sawadi islands. The resort runs diving and snorkling trips to the Daymaniyat islands which are considered some of the best in Oman. You can hire a local boat to take you to the Sawadi islands for snorkling and/or a picnic lunch (you or hotel supply). The largest Sawadi island has a watchtower/fort at the top. After a bit of a climb it has fabulous views. Great fun for kids if carefully watched.

i agree with above TAers, a better try would be to split your stay at shangila and al-sawadi resorts.

Thanks to all for the tips! We've decided to also rent a car for a few days. Any recommendations on good day trips and any "must see/must do" places?

Thanks again!

A nice place for you to stay outside of muscat might be Turtle beach resort, Ras al Haad - they have their private beach area!! Just past Sur, so you can see some of the wadis and sights on the way down there.

Or Oman Dive Centre in Muscat... they have nice little chalets on the beach... just double check... i'm not entirely sure if you can stay there if you are not diving, I seem to recall hearing someone commenting!!

Thanks to all for your comments. We had a great trip to Oman with our 3 young children. Spent most our time at the Shangri-La Resort in Muscat since we booked very late and most other places were already booked. But we were extremely happy with the hotel, the service, the staff, the food, etc.

We also rented a car and went to Nizwa to see the fort as well as Jibreen Castle - both very interesting. Kids enjoyed seeing the forts and also climbing on the cannons!

We definitely plan to go to Oman again, to do the things we didn't get a chance to do such as a cruise along the coast, wadi walks, turtles and dessert camping.

Highly recommend going to Oman for a family vacation. Such a beautiful and diverse country.
