Cruise stop?

I am deciding between a cruise that stops in Dublin for 2 days or one that stops in Dublin for one day and Kirkhall for one day in September. Any suggestions! Thank you.

I would go for the one that includes Kirkwall. But then, I love islands.

Yes me too, take the one with Kirkwall, a million miles different from Dublin.

Kirkwall itself isn´t the biggest of sights, but there is the St. Magnus cathedral & its surrounding square (nice music pub/cafe in the white building bý the entrance to the walking street, & free & interesting, local museum opposite the cathedral).

If you the possibility of taking a small island tour, do it - you won´t regret it.

DO schedule the Maes Howe, Scara Brae, and Ring Of Brodgar excursions.

I have no idea what you are referring to. Neither does anyone else I suspect.

Are you asking about a tour to Maes Howe etc on 8 May? You can use a local bus, or more likely a taxi because I think your time will be limited? But you will need to book places at each venue as well as sort out transport.

We will be in cruise port for 1 day in Aug. 2018. Is Kirkwall easy to walk and see on your own or is a private tour recommended? We do not like to participate in ship tours.

How far is it approx. from where the ships dock to get to the city center?

If you're expecting a big city you will be sorely disappointed. The population of Kirkwall is about 9000 people. It's tiny. You can walk round the centre in 15 mins, maybe less. When a cruise ship is in port there is a fleet of buses running between Kirkwall and the ship all day. Free of charge. The journey takes about 10 minutes.

So what type of sightseeing do most cruise ship passengers do in their 1 day in Kirkwall if all the sights can be seen in such a short time?

Would arranging a private tour company to show us areas outside of Kirkwall be recommended?

We will be there from 9a- 6p.
