Of course not, you will need a clear/semi clear sky. Depends if the forecast is for a lot of snow or just showers. Skies may be clearer inland.

Not really true that, Klima... Since I have seen the NL in a snowstorm too..;)

If you are in the mountains, then the weather front can come from west, and you will have snow in the air, but if the snow are not to heavy, then maybe the sky straight up is clear...

If it snowing in Tromsø, then a guide can drive you to a better location...

Hi Gunnar,

We are planning to go to Tromso in Oct 2013 for NL with the opportunity to go snow dog slegging. But now hestitate since there are quite a lot of comments saying that there is probably no snow (at least not covering the whole ground for a good scene for dog slegging). was that the condition last year and where can i see the latest snow forecast for this Oct 2013?

There is never any snow in October, maybe a little bit on the peaks.

Some year there is one or two weeks with snow in October. Last year it was no snow in October. So, earliest you can plan in Dogsledding is December, but best chance for good snow conditions are after new year...

You need to keep an eye on the MOON forecast, if you got a full moon, you ain't going to see them. Google MOON CALENDER and you will get the information.

That is pure nonsense danikbates. The lights are there if there is NL activity. The only thing you need is darkness and NL activity. With a weak display the moon can cause some light pollution, that is all. With a strong NL display the moon will enhance the show.

Yeah, Danikbates, you and to many people out here on TA have misunderstood this with Aurora vs Full moon.

Of course, if it's a weak NL then you will not see so much of it,but if it's a good one its much better show with the moon on the sky!

The photographers says the week before the full moon are best.

And many times we get the best Aurora show when the moon are there. It's easier to take pictures too..;)

Think about if you are here, in the darkest time, there's no moon and no Aurora activity, then you will see noting!

With the full moon you can also enjoy the landscape around you.

So, forget the moon and go for the chase when you can, and hope fore the best... you need also good weather, and little good luck... It's a question about gambling..;)

If you don't live up here then...

The season for see Aurora in northern Norway, goes from mid-August to mid-April...
