Small town near Vienna

Can anyone suggest a small town within easy distance of Vienna. We are a senior couple looking for a stay of 4 to 5 nights at a BnB or hotel with restaurants within walking distance. We like local food, culture and long walks. Looking for a quiet holiday.

I happened to read of Neusiedl Am See would that be near to what we are looking for?

Thanks for a response.

Why near Vienna? If you want to be able to pop into Vienna Neusiedlersee is not so good.

What would you consider "easy distance"? And why do you want to be near Vienna at all, if long, quiet walks are your priority?

Have a look at „Baden bei Wien” – and there for hotels like “Hotel Herzogshof” and “At the Park”, “Hotel Schloss Weikersdorf

Nice walks in Beethoven’s footsteps along the vine clad hillsides towards Gumpoldskirchen.

Easy one hour ride on Badner Bahn from “downtown” Baden to the Opera are in Vienna.

Or look at “Krems” at the end of the Wachau/Danube valley and there at “Steigenberger” or “Zum goldenen Engel”.

Krems is well connected by train (1 hr.) to Vienna, by bus to Melk and Dürnstein, nice wine walks in the surroundings.

This is an interesting request – let us know what you picked and . . . later, how you liked it!

Much closer to Vienna than Krems and Baden would be “Klosterneuburg” – well connected by rail and again offering nice walks into the hills. Look for hotel “Anker” and “Hotel Höhenstraße”.

Please note, even 4* hotels and especially hotels in small towns don’t feature air-condition.

If you are more into a “hill station” type of vacation look at “Semmering” and “Reichenau an der Rax”

Thanks for the input. I have been to Austria over 3 trips. Actually been to Vienna also but chose Vienna as an entry point to small towns. I may not stay in Vienna if the place i am going to is near by Vienna.

As for air conditioning, i think its time they look into it as the weather is changing all over the world. I was in Bad Gasten some time and it was hot with a strong sunshine. Could do with air con.

I will research the places mentioned and return to this correspondence.

If you already visit vienna, I suggest you to go to Salzburg town, charming town. World famous Mirabell palace, and many more interesting places in town to visit.

Hellbrunn palace (Tricky fountains) also nice place to visit. You can take public transport for it.

World-famous UNESCO heritage site, town HALLSTATT is one day drip from salzburg. Lake-front town. you see this town in lost of the austria's must visit place on web too.

St.Wolfgang town is also near to salzburg. Situated near lake. stay opposite lakefront property.

things to do - Schafberg Cog Railway and lake cruise for few hours.

Salzburg for 1 night atleast. If you like to take hallstatt day-trip from salzburg you need one more day. or if you feel comfortable take bus to hallstatt or st.wolfgang town. stay there for a night and come back to salzburg and than move back to vienna.

@IndiaEagle

The most suitable town would probably be Baden bei Wien, because it is fairly close to Vienna and it has some flair and life.

It is a little upscale and offers a nice town center & city park, a casino and a racecourse (check schedule in advance though if you remotely consider going there).

By regional train it is possible to reach Vienna in 40 minutes. I would not take the slow tram line "Badner Bahn" which also links Baden and Vienna.

I am frankly not sure what you imagine when you talk about "small towns". There would be other places for sure, but they could be too small I am afraid.

Thanks Shital S, i've been to the places you have mentioned. I am maping my travel and planning to visit Bratislava then to Austria since Vienna is close by. I have also been to Vienna in the past, but prefer a small town nearby that has bed and breakfast places and restaurants near by. We prefer a quiet place for long walks.

Bratislava is beautiful. There are plenty of cafes on cobbled streets. I recomm. 2 nights in Bratislava to explore.

You can also take half day wine tasting tour from Bratislava.

Danube Valley is also a good option if you are interested to visit nearby Vienna.
