We are doing a day trip to Salzburg from Munich.. Any must does and recommendations for dining?
The best attractions in my estimation are the fortress up on the mountain--very wonderful views from there (and not every tourist manages to get that far away from the gift shops) and Mirabel gardens. The rest of the city is mostly kitschy souvenir shops and over touristed attractions. The old town was so totally over-run with tour bus visitors, it was hard to even walk (in July). You can find better "old towns" in many other european cities so it's not worth dealing with it in Salzburg. As to food we ate several times at the NordSee in the old town--it was simple, reasonable and fresh seafood. We found this much better than trying potluch at the mostly mediocre tourist restaurants. Do your eating in Munich. We were so glad to get to Munich after 2 days in Salzburg--to a real town, with real restaurants and shopping. So many good restaurants and so much good food everywhere you look in Munich.
If your into Kitsch and like the "Sound of Music", book yourself in for one of these tours.
Good fun if you like to have a sing a long and a giggle
The Augustiner Bräustübl is an essential visit. Great Maerzen beer in 1 or half-litre earthenware mugs. A choice of food vendors, selling good, solid Austrian food. Depending on the weather, sit either around huge tables in great monastic dining halls or under the chestnut trees in the beer garden.
