transportation advice

Hi All- we have suddenly been freed up from seemingly endless family medical issues - what a relief! So, we're taking off for Germany and Austria for a few weeks starting Apr 25.

I think we're set on 4 nights each in Munich, then Garmisch, then Salzburg, then maybe Carinthia(?), and finish in Vienna. Probably a couple of side trips in each locale.

Itinerary suggestions are welcome, but my main question in about transportation. I'm not at all familiar with getting around in this area of Europe. I would assume that Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna are best navigated with trams and trains and taxis(?)

And maybe take a train to Graz and rent a car there for travel in the country-side(?) Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Mike

Train is by far the easiest transport option - fast, clean trains link all of the cities and towns on your list. The train company - OEBB - has a website and app for travel in and to/from Austria > https://www.oebb.at/en/fahrplan/fahrplanauskunft

Once in the cities you can use public transport or taxis. For trips into the countryside look at the local buses, which usually run every hour (some routes every two hours) or local trains. The Tourist Office websites for each city will have details and suggested itineraries, as well as details about special travelcards and discount cards for sightseeing.

In European cities it is best to use public transport, which has a high standard here. Traveling between cities and larger towns as well as to/from popular places is easy as well, but for more accurate advice you would have to state your full itinerary.

Tickets for longer train journeys should be bought in advance in order to be able to secure one of the discounted fares.

Hi

I think 4 nights in Munich is too long unless you have a specific reason to be there? The old town can be done in an afternoon. Garmisch-Partenkirchen may also not warrant 4 nights, however this could be a place where a car would be useful. Zugspitz, Germany's highest mountain can be accessed from the town center (near railway station) but with a car you could visit Oberammergau - the passion play town and houses in the village painted with religious motifs. You could also visit King Ludwigs follies, firstly Linderhof Palace and then Neuschwanstein castle. Mittenwald is also worthy of a visit.

Regards
