Trip to Helsinki in December, arriving staying 1 day then train to St Petersburg for 3 nights then 3 more nights in Helsinki. Wondering if its worth trying to squeeze a trip to Tallins? or just relax and enjoy Finland.

Have hotel booked in St Petersburg and waiting for invitation letter to apply for Russian visa, nothing else booked yet as we have time.

Looking for any suggestions., ideas or thoughts, places to go or things to do, easier ways to do things.

Can't wait to travel to the cold and enjoy some time away after all this lockdown. Traveling from Florida/U.S.

Thanks in advance.

In my opinion, it would be a pity to miss out on Tallinn. You should at least take a day trio (easily done from Helsinki) https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g189896-i442-k12413668-Ferries_Helsinki_Tallinn_2019_Update-Finland.html And, as Helsinki is not at its best in December, 3 days here could seem a looong time. Actually, I'd suggest more time in St. Petersburg - it's a metropolis with plenty to do and see even in the dark days of winter.

We took ferry 3 years ago stayed 72 hours and no visa required. However we could have spent more time and not see everything we wanted. Going back for another 72 hours when covid dies down some more

Yeah you can definitely squeeze in Tallinn. Not sure about the weather in December but I expect it to be super cold! When we visited over 2 summers ago we spent a day or 2 in Helsinki then visited St Petersburg via ferry and returned to Helsinki and from there we also did a ferry day trip to Tallinn. You can easily walk around the city to explore before heading back to Helsinki in the late afternoon or everning. You can see tips on both ferry to St Petersburg and Tallinn here https://www.itsallbee.com/2020/05/itinerary-one-day-in-tallinn-estonia/ as we found the tips useful when planning our visit. As far as Russian Visa is concerned, you don’t need it if you use the ferry otherwise if you have the visa you can just take the train which is quicker than the ferry so you can spend more time exploring.

The ferry between Helsinki and St. Petersburg has been currently suspended due to COVID-related travel restrictions. The ferry company has not published any information on their future operations, so there's no certainty when and if the line will be reinstated.
