Summer's over by September, so be prepared for cool and rainy weather - it will feel positively Arctic to you. The heart of the lakelands is center-east of the country, but there are plenty of lakes pretty much everywhere in Finland. A small town such as Hämeenlinna may be a good base for you, bearing in mind the time of year. There are plenty of beauty spots in the countryside nearby, starting with Aulanko Park, a 15-minute bus ride from Hämeenlinna.
Koli national park in eastern Finland is very nice. It has bit more elevation changes than most of the Finnish lakelands and quite stunning scenery.

There are plenty of other national parks as well and of course plenty of nice spots that don't have any official status. I would go through this list.

As mentioned in September weather is quite cool and possibly rainy. So prepare with proper gear or have a backup plan if you don't want to get wet.
I recommend to look at Lappeenranta, ca 2 hrs from Helsinki; http://www.visitlappeenranta.fi/en/
