need restaurant recommendation

We are looking for a restaurant for a special night out. Nothing too 'stuffy'. Prefer high-end casual in a notable restaurant. Scandinavian/Swedish cuisine.

thanks in advance!

1. Re: need restaurant recommendation

I would check out http://www.stockholm-eating.com/ for nice places to eat!

I would also recommed restaurants like Teatergrillen, Grill, Hotellet, F12, Lux, PA & co, Pontus by the Sea or his new restaurant called Pontus, Ulla Winblad, Cafe Opera, Paul & Norbert, Gondolen and much more!!

I would also check out http://www.phaidon.com/travel/ as they work with Wallpaper magazine and they have done a guide of Stockholm, its REALLY good! Where to eat, where to stay, where to shop, where to relax and much more!!

Have fun!

Restaurants in Stockholm

Typical Swedish dishes is meatballs and nice meatballs you can get at Operakällarens bakficka (you sit around the bar or at tables with room for 2 people only so its quite small. Meatballs cost around 130. Here you can also find herring with cheese which is also another traditional swedish dish preferably served with new potatoes also with a reasonable price around 130 kr. This is a really nice restaurant if you dine alone since you sit around the bar. Other typical dishes in Sweden is Palt but to find that in Stockholm you have to be invited to somebody coming from the North of Sweden....Palt is made of potatoes and flour and eaten with pork and lingonberries. Fermented herring is also another Swedish dish but that you can only find once a year at Sturehof because it is fermented and smells like the rotten fish it is... But you can always buy a can and open it and eat it with potatoes, onion and of course beer and schnapps like Skåne! Beware of the smell when you open the can so do it outside of the house.

There are quite a few really nice gourmet restaurants in Stockholm of international standard but some of them demanding a thick wallet!

For google maps where you find the location of reviewed restaurants click on link below.

Esperanto http://www.esperantorestaurant.se/ only tasting menues; really excellent innovative food. Location Östermalm

Mistral also very good only tasting menues but do not buy an individual bottle of wine go for the wine recommended to each course to get the full experience. Location Old Town

Lux http://www.luxstockholm.com/ really nice but you need to take a taxi) used to be good value for money but now they have raised prices with approx 10% so a maincourse costs no less than 295 SEK. Location Lilla Essingen

Vassa Eggen http://www.vassaeggen.com/ really nice also should have a star in guide Michelin. One problem is that each course is really small. Each dish is really small but very very nice. Eat at least 3 courses if you are hungry. Location close to Stureplan and Svampen.

Leijontornet http://www.leijontornet.se/ innovative food with swedish food in a new way, eat in the bar is a good choice nice food but with cheaper ingredients try the pork if available. The bar a great place in Stockholm, try the Blodpudding you either hate it or love it. You can find dishes in the bar starting at around 155 kr and the most expensive costs 225 which is really good value since quality is excellent and bread is extremely good. Location Old town.

Mathias Dahlgren http://www.mdghs.se/ the former chef and owner of Bon Lloc silver medallion in World Championship in cooking. The food is fresh, clean taste, ecological, swedish taste, not bombastic. Very good! Nice service also. Opened May 14, 2007. Prices are high a tasting menu of 6 courses is 1300 SEK and wine pairing approx 700. These kind of prices are on the same level as 3 star restaurants in Paris and London so they are better value for money. This is though the new scandinavian cooking which could make it worth for a foreigner to try it since it is different compared to French and mediterranean cooking. Location Grand Hotel, Blaiseholmen (opposite the royal castle).

F12 http://www.f12.se/ design with some inspiration from asia food wise really good but has become rather expensive better value elsewhere but if you like designer restaurants head for F12. Location Between Old town and central station.

Operakällaren http://www.operakallaren.se/ french traditional nice ingredients like foigrais, caviar but a little bit too formal. You feel afraid to make a sound. Location Kungsträdgården, city.

Wedholms http://www.wedholmsfisk.se/ is the best fish restaurant in Stockholm really expensive go there for lunch instead they have daily specials for 195 kr which is good value since fish is excellent. Location Nybrokajen close to the Royal Theater Dramaten.

Riche Birjer Jarlsgatan 4, serves traditional swedish and french food in a modern way. Staying true to Thore Wretman's (the chef that took swedish cooking into the 19th century), but still trying to innovate. Extra plus for the very nice and bustling bar. Location Close to Sturplan near the Royal Theater Dramaten.

Best in Sweden is Oaxen http://www.oaxenkrog.se/ but it is on an island close to södertälje approx 67 kilometers from Stockholm.

Cheaper alternatives

Mondän ( http://www.mondan.se), Tulegatan 10, nice food, attentive and really nice staff. Prices range from 155-275 for a main course. Starters up to 135 and desserts 75kr. Location between Vasastan and Östermalm.

Marie Laveau ( http://www.marielaveau.se/). Location Södermalm close to Mariatorget and Hotel Rival.

Lo Scudetto http://www.loscudetto.se/ (södermalm, italian food), Location Södermalm 10-15 min walk from Slussen. If in the area do visit Cajsa Warg which is an excellent foodstore, old fashioned interior with locally produced, organic food.

Bistro Süd http://www.bistrosud.se/ . Location Södermalm, close to Mariatorget and Rival)

Dining club http://www.diningclub.se/ ,innovative food. Location Vasastan close to Vasaparken.

Gondolens vinbar http://www.eriks.se and choose vinbar södermalm winebar with a small selection of food but daily specials for 99 kr is really really high value for money. Location Södermalm at Slussen.

Brasserie Bobonne, have only tried this restaurant for lunch but done so many times and it is really good but lunch costs around 105 SEK. Östermalm not far from Östermalmstorg.

Ful och gul (ugly and yellow) one of the best chines places in Stockholm located at Erstagatan on Södermalm.

Best hamburger Texas longhorn steakhouse at Humlegårdsgatan at Östermalm

4 knop creperie at Sidestreet to Götgatan at Södermalm

Riddargatans cafe (östermalm)

Druvan (lunch only). At the Army Museum, Östermalm. Good swedish food, nice salad bar, outside seating during the summer. Attractive building, but the lovely plastered arched ceiling means that it can be a little noisy. Östermalm.

Naviya located on Södermalm http://www.naviya.se very kitchy interior, but really nice thai food really good value for money.

Boule och berså is a really nice place for relaxing in the garden playing boule drinking beer really close to the canal with lots of boat traffic quite cheap food. Beware for long waiting time for food if crowded sometimes 45 minutes but relax in the hammock and enjoy a beer and the 45 min goes very quickly! Location Danvikstull.

Terrys deli close to kulturhuset is a really nice lunch/basic restaurant when you want to enjoy a nice wok. Lunch is 70 SEK and in the evenings is 75-80 a lot of food for the money and really tasty. This is a very basic place stand in line in a queue, very basic interior but really good food.

Beautiful view

Hermans ( http://www.hermans.se/) is an amazing vegetarian restaurant, with fantastic views over the harbour. Sit on the covered veranda (heaters and blankets in winter) for the best views. And at SEK 128 for dinner and a hot drink, you're not paying through the nose for a view. You can find it at Fjällgatan 23 (nearest tube, Slussen).

Bockholmen but food is almost the same as last year. Archipelago feel. Do not go there for the food but for the view you can go there by boat.

Gondolen fantastically beautiful one of the best views from a restaurant in Europe but food may seem overpriced.

Coffee for an excellent cheap espresso head for Sosta on a sidestreet to Biblioteksgatan called Jakobbergsgatan 5, http://www.sostabar.com/ this is an italian place so no sitting for hours and sip, standing tables quick shot and off you go! Excellent!

There is also an excellent cart serving Espresso to reasonable prices just outside of PK Huset right on the sidewalk. Also very good coffe.

It is an updated version and i included a link to google so people can find the restaurants on the map. Unfortenately the link is too long in terms of number of letters so i had to split in two... Hopefully it can be copied anyway.
