48hrs in Stockholm

We are visiting on 16th Dec for 48hrs. We are visiting the Xmas markets but what else should we do and where should we eat? We like authentic local things and to do things and see things we can’t see at home in the UK.

You should try julbord, a traditional Swedish Christmas smörgåsbord with bot cold and hot dishes. Served by many restaurants in december.

And if you really want to go for the authentic local experience, order a julmust (a non-alcoholic christmas drink) with it.

Will do! What about things to see? Will the boat be running to the palace and is the bus tour worth it?

Regarding things to see, I can recommend a trip to the outdoor museum Skansen. Located on Djurgården, an island with a lot of other museums. A walk around Gamla stan is also worth it, many old narrow streets.

No the boat to Drottningholm Palace is not running now. If you want a small archipelago tour you can take a trip to Vaxholm with either Stromma or Vaxholm company.

The Vasa museum is of course a first rate attraction (17th C preserved man of war).

Metro to Brommaplan (green line west) and change to bus for Drottningholm castle (Mälaröarna, many lines go this way). Get off at the first stop after the bridge, the castle is clearly visible.

You'd better check the opening hours of Drottningholm Palace, it looks closed Dec 11-30 and also Dec 2-3

The palace was very nice, especially the Chinese Theater, but with limited 48 hours time not sure I would go out there anyway at expense of other sites in Stockholm especially in winter.

The Royal Palace (time it for changing of the guard), History Museum (free), City Hall (see on an inside tour only), Vasa, a couple of others will consume 48 hours easily, among others.
