Spinalonga

Hi.

Thank you in advance.

We will be staying in rethymnon near the harbour in early October.

Please can anybody advise us on how to get to spinalonga by public transport and how long it will take, before we consider either car hire or a trip.

Thank you

Bus to Heraklion (90 min.) > bus to Agios Nikolaos (60 - 90 min.) > bus to either Elounda or Plaka (30 - 40 min.) > boat to Spinalonga (5 - 15 min.). Plus waiting time at bus stations and ferry pier.

A total of approx. 3½ - 4½ hours each way.

You would catch a bus from Rethymnon to Heraklion and then from there catch a bus to Agios Nikolaos. You can then decide whether to come over on a larger boat from there or catch another bus to Elounda or Plaka. Plaka is the shorter crossing on a smaller fishing style boat.

For an idea from Plaka have a look at https://flic.kr/s/aHsjH8amQ8 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkMUH-8Vbe8

We hire a car so don't use public transport but I do know it is very comfortable and reasonably priced but I am sure others can give exact prices.

Probably better to hire a car for the day, as you can do it (Rethymno to Elounda) in about two & a half hours each way.

If you do hire a car, and I agree that is a good option, make sure you have unlimited km included in the deal. Many places only offer it for hirings of 3 days or more.
