Where 's the best place to stay, best to see & do?

Planning a 10 day trip to Crete - Where is the best place to stay, which city and what are the MUST see places? I loved Rodos, is there anything similar on Crete?

Thanks !

We stayed at the Blue Horizon, just outside the "old town". Rodos.

LOVED the old town. Are there any place like this in crete. . .

Really love the ancient sites two - we drove to everyone on the island of Rodos.

For 10 days trip you have time just to see central-western crete. You can arrive by boat in Souda (chania) , Rethymno or by air (chania). Find a place in REthymno town or very near and use it as a day-journey base. From there you can reach almost everything!

Things to see in chania : Old town, venetian port, some churches and monuments, elafonisi, falassarna, Gramvousa & balos, Paleochora, Samaria Gorge, georgioupolis (these are the most known)

Things to see in Rethymno : old town, fortezza, venetian port, some churches and monuments in the city, fragokastelo, plakias, preveli monastery and beach, triopetra, Agios Pavlos, Agia Galini, Spili, Arkadi monastery, Arsani monastery, Argyroupoli-Lappa, Petres beach, Damnoni, Bali, Panormo (these are also the most known)

There are many more to find, even those tha tourist don't know! ;)

In heraklion you must see of course knossos palace and the archaeological museum and in the south faistos palace. One day trip for those is enough...

Hi A D 07

The archaeological museum in Iraklion is closed at present for major renovations and is unlikey to reopen this year. With 10 days you really wil have to decide on one specific area of Crete which is a large island at 250kms long. Candilakis suggests Chania and Rethymno which is fine and would allow you to see all the wonderful sights in that part of Crete.

All the towns on the north coast are linked by the coastal highway on which a good bus service runs every hour or so from Chania to Rethymno - Iraklion - Agios Niklaos - Siteia and all points in between. Bus ride from Rethymno to Iraklion is about 1.5 hours and costs 7-8 euros or thereabouts each way.

Once in Iraklion, the bus will pull into Bus Station A on Koundouritou. This is also the station from where you catch the bus to Knossos. Take bus service #2 which will have "Knossos" or "Archanes" on the front - trip takes 20 mins and costs about 1.5 euros each way. It drops you off right outside the main entrance to Knossos.

Thanks SOOOOO much for this wonderful information. We are about to book a place in Rethimnon as per your advice and venture to Chania and Heraklion as we can. We are flying into Heraklion but need to get to the hotel in Rethimnon. Do you suggest renting a car, taking the bus or taxi. We will have just flown from Atlanta, and will be pretty darn tired. What's best in your opionion?

Again thank you so much for the advice. . .I'm sure I'll have more questions for you later on.

Hi again

Why not pre-book a car so that it's waiting for you at Iraklion airport? Much quicker than a bus and a cab will cost quite a bit to take you to Rethymno. If you require an automatic vehicle, make certain to let the hire company aware otherwise, they may have a problem finding one for you upon arrival. if you are ok with a stick shift, then there's no problem at all. All the big multinationals have desks at the airport so why not go on-line and arrange a car and travel to Rethymno in style? You should be able to find a medium sized car for 30 euros a day, or less if you book for several days in one go.

Having a devil of a time finding nice hotels near the city center of Chania or Rethimnon - I've read tht the road is busy and way too far for to walk from some of the rsorts out from the center - Any advise?

We are also coming from Atlanta to Greece and Crete is our last stop on our island hopping. I researched a bunch of hotels in both Rethymnon and Chiania-it seems like Rethymnon is more centrally located and better to use as a base for day trips. How long does the drive between Chiania take? We are looking for a place to stay in Rehtymnon too and finding it challenging. Any ideas?
