Kiev to Crete, via Athens

I'm looking to go to Crete next year, coming from Kiev. A direct flight to Crete doesn't look possible. Would a flight to Athens, then another flight to Crete be the way to go? What happens if the first flight is delayed (which seems to happen a lot with shorter flights) and I miss the second one?

I also looked at ferries from Athens to Crete.

Any other options?

Yes,

Kiev to Athens isn't exactly a short flight, and whether or not it will be delayed depends on all sorts of things, especially the airline you book with. Of course there can always be delays, so plan for one, and avoid missing the second flight, by leaving a wide window between the flights. Aegean have several flights a day to Crete, so choose one that gives you at least a 3-4 hour gap.

If you book it all on a single booking then if the 1st flight is delayed and you miss your connection the airline will arrange for you to get on the next available flight at no extra cost.

If you make 2 separate bookings then it is up to you to allow enough time between flights and if you miss your connection you will need to buy a new ticket to get you to your final destination.
