sesmarias

In the coming weeks we are staying at the Torre Velha in Sesmairas - is anyone able to tell us what restaurants, supermarkets etc are around there please?

Also after hearing the news about muggings/murders, i guess it is not advised to walk to albuferia as we had planned/hoped to do.

We will not be able to afford taxis there as we have a small budget - i know that Gale also has a beach so we could go there one day instead of the beach at Sesmarias but is there anything else we can do? Or any nice places/small towns/villages around to visit?

Or will Sesmarias be fine as the muggings seem to be near the strip at night - just wary of walking around if Gale and Sesmarias are quiet.

Thanks for your help

Please see this TA page about Sesmarias which should answer most of your questions

tripadvisor.co.uk/Travel-g189112-c103126/Alb…

Sesmarias is two miles from Albufeira and there are steep hills involved in both driections.

There are plenty of places you can visit if you have a car. Without a car, it's very difficult as Sesmarias has a very limited bus service with last journey back fom Albufeira at 1730 except on schooldays.

Two very good and popular restaurants in Sesmarias are JK's and Jompra. Reviews are in Albufeira Restaurants in the left hand sidebar. JK's will fetch you if you call and take you home again. They also have free internet. O Marinheiro near Castelo and Ti-Manel on the road to Vale da Parra are also very good. There are several beached in the area, all with restaurants on them.

I would not walk to or from Albufeira at night. There are no pavements in places and very poor lighting.

Bld211, we are staying in Sao Rafael, near the big hotel, can you walk to Albufeira from there?, maybe not at night but in daylight, early evening.

You can walk to the Old Town. It will take maybe 30 minutes. The Giro bus also stops at the Marina. Cubsur has more details on that. There is a very nice pizzeria and ice cream parlour at the Marina called No Solo Italia, as well as various watersports.

Thanks very much for the reply - how long is the walk roughly from sesmairas to the marina, if we decide not to walk to albuferia in the day time?

The Sesmarias area is quite quiet, but has some of the best beaches in the Algarve. Make sure you visit Sao Rafael beach, the most gorgeous, but I would also recommend Castelo and Evaristo. Personally, I don't like Gale beach so much as it is long and flat and slightly characterless. However, you can walk along the beach from Gale to Armacao de Pera. We walked back along the boardwalks behind the dunes and saw flamingoes and plenty of other wildlife.

It's about 10 minutes walk from Sao Rafael to the Marina, downhill. Might take a little longer to get back. Sao Rafael's beach is really lovely.

It is a quiet area but also one of the nicest in the area, so don't worry, you will have a great time.
