Relaxing Seaside Town near Lisbon

We're arriving in Lisbon mid-week in early May after an overseas flight from USA. Rather than plunging right into Lisbon sightseeing, we'd like to spend the first 2 days relaxing in a smaller town.

The ideal characteristics would be a seaside town, less than 2 hours train journey from Lisbon, with a quaint old-town area, and with just enough hotels, restaurants and shops to keep a tourist happy. However, we would wish to avoid any place known for having a raucous nightlife with loud music coming from the discos until 4:00 am.

Any suggestions?

Cascais? Just 40 minutes by frequent suburban train from Lisbon's Cais do Sodre station (1hr 15 mins maybe altogether from the airport as there is no train service or metro/subway station there, Aerobus runs every 20 minutes from airport to Cais do Sodre.

Some would say that Cascais doesn't really have a 'quaint' bit (not many places do any more) but there are some very pleasant streets in the town and they do like their flowers there.

Cascais is a popular resort for day trippers and longer stay holidaymakers but you will find that in early May it isn't really summer, but nice enough.

The next door town of Estoril (5 minutes shorter journey) is also worth a look.

The issue is the train ride, there aren't that many beach villages acessible by train.

Cascais will be quiet, basically only those who live there will be there during the week (but they are a couple of thousands).

Ericeira and Sesimbra can also be good options but no train available, just bus or a taxi.

Thank you. Cascais looks very promising.
