Is this all on the same booking? Which airlines?
This is ample time. The important thing is wether this is on one booking, as your incoming flight can be late...
If it is all on one booking with one PNR, you should be fine but......isn't there always a but? AFAI Delta and Swiss are NOT partners and Delta doesn't fly to Newark from Zurich. Do you have a connection after Zurich? Did you book this ticket yourself and where did you book it? Something is a bit odd and it's hard to know if the connection time is "protected" (meaning the airline will have to put you up in hotel, feed you etc. if they don't get you to Zurich in time for the connection).
<<If it is all on one booking with one PNR>>
That's not correct as a single PNR can contain several tickets. The flights have to be on the same ticket, and checked through to the onward destination, for the bags to be automatically transfered over to the next flight.
The direct Zurich to Newark route is operated on a Swiss / United codeshare. Please advise how you booked your tickets? Were they booked individually on the airlines' websites, or through a 3rd party site or agent?Edited: 05 January 2018, 10:57
Thanks, AngelaM, for the correction. As you've noted before you have a lot of travel booking experience so I'm sure I got it backwards! Point is the OP needs to know what his booking arrangement is and which airline he is on for sure. It seems the OP is confused about which airline from ZRH to EWR so a thorough check of the booking is important.
Oops! 😔 Flight is Zurich to JFK (we usually fly out of Newark to Europe). We booked directly with Delta. The flight from Venice to Zurich will be booked separately if the consensuses is that we have enough time . Another option is to fly to Zurich the day before we are leaving and book a room at the Radisson blue at the airport?
Just realize the consensus here can't account for flight delays, etc and ultimately this is your decision. Since these are 2 separate tickets issued by different airlines - if anything goes wrong you might be out of luck.
So, it's how comfortable you are with taking the chance. Of course it might all work out - but then again, it might not. Your alternative of spending the night is the safe choice- but might also give you at least a nice dinner and chance to see some of Zurich.
