Itinerary help

Our family will be traveling to Switzerland in early May. My husband is attending a conference in Basel. We did some research and put together this itinerary for the 2nd part of our trip:

May 6th- Basel- Lausanne

May 7th- Explore the city. Go to Gruyere & Broc.

Head to Zermatt in the evening.

May 8th: Explore Zermatt

May 9th: Take Glacier Express to Andermatt

Then Gothard Panorama Express train to Lucerne (staying 4 nights)

Go to Mt Pilatus in the afternoon ??

May 10th: Day trip to Jungfraujoch

May 11th: Mt. Titlis in the morning

Afternoon Free

May 12th: Free

Head to Zurich in the evening (flying home on the 13th).

We're considering another alternative (if the weather permits) on the 8th:

Take the Glaceir Express to Brig.

Then Brig to Jungfraujoch via Grindelwald. Otherwise, we would be making a day trip to Jungfraujoch from Lucerne on another day.

We're planning on purchasing the Swiss Travel Pass for our entire stay. I was wondering if trips to some of these excursions could be purchased on the same day. I don't want to commit so far in advance and risk missing an excursion due to bad weather.

1. Re: Itinerary help

You have some problems with this itinerary:

1) Do not go to Lausanne. Instead stay in Vevey or Montreux. Lots more to see and do in those towns (unless you specifically want to visit the Olympic Museum in lausanne). Day trip to Gruyères etc is best done via Montreux anyway.

2) Day trip to the Jungfraujoch from Luzern is really not a good idea. It will take you 8+hours on trains in one day. Also - never, ever, schedule mountain excursions in advance. You need to make two lists - plans A & B. A for good weather and B for bad. Mountains are A list visits. No point in going when it is raining or snowing or there are low clouds - you see nothing.

3) May 8th back up plan: You cannot take the Glacier Express from Zermatt to Brig. They will not allow you on the train. (no local traffic...) Plus if you are going to the Oberland from Zermatt the fastest route (since you have a lot planned for that day) is not via Brig. It is via Visp/Spiez/Interlaken Ost.

4) Never, for reasons outlined above, buy tickets for mountain excursions in advance. get them on the day of travel or at the least not before the evening before... The only one that might need pre-booking but most likely not in May is the Jungfraujoch. Go to the station in Grindelwald the day before you plan to go and get the tickets and seat reservation then...
