In Kandersteg you drive onto a train, which will let you drive off at Goppenstein to continue your journey.
Thanks, I know I need to get a train in Kandersteg. Problem is google map no longer show this route anymore. Not sure why. By the way, could I use half fare card for this train?
Half fare card is not valid on the car trains.
The car train Kandersteg to Goppenstein runs every 30 mins (about every 20 on weekends) and costs about 30frs per car. There is no additional charge for the occupants.
Route from Interlaken is: via Spiez and turn up to Kandersteg. Follow signs for car train. Pay. Put car on train when signaled to do so. You sit in the car throghout the journey (car is in the tunnel for about 11mins). Then drive off train. Follow signs to Gampel. At Gampel turn towards Brig. At Visp turn up to Täsch (signs for zermatt). there is usually a long traffic jam waiting to get into Visp, especially at rush hours and on weekends.
Total time involved depends on how long you have to wait for the train and how long it takes to get to the roundabout in Visp but should not be more than 2 hours.
Thank you so much! By checking accuweather, I notice there will be some big snow around Christmas. Will the road condition become very bad between interlaken and zermatt?
Would be nice having snow all over the country this Christmas - but don't rely on local weather forecasts in the Alps for more than a week. Chances are that the stable high pressure situation over most of Europe will not last, but chances are to still have for more than a week a situation with fog at lower altitude (clearing up partially during the day), sunshine above,
In case of a possible weather change with precipitations several scenarios are possible. But even without, check information on road conditions before traveling - for instance https:/…aktuelle-lage.php (in German, French or Italian, no English version).
By heavy snowfall (and weather fronts arriving from W/SW), chances are to have highway 12 being closed between Châtel-Saint-Denis and Vevey (for the Bern, Montreux route) at short notice for several hours, snow on the highway between Flamatt and Châtel-Saint-Denis - then detour via Lausanne, Montreux is recommended. For the route via Lötschberg railway tunnel, expect snow mainly up to Kandersteg; road after Goppenstein tunnel exit is partially sheltered in galleries; snow then again possible on the road up to Täsch.
Usually, snow on highways and main roads is cleared within hours - by possible very heavy snowfall, better wait at some sheltered place rather than taking chances being blocked somewhere on the road.Edited: 16 December 2016, 08:08
IF there is a heavy snowfall around Christmas we will all be surprised here. Weather forecasts are reliable about 5 days out, best 2 days out. If it in fact does snow - then follow jm2cents advice above.
Use www.tcs.ch/inforoute to get up to date info on routes potentially closed by snow - or better yet, get their app - TCS = Touring Club Suisse - on your iPhone. then you can check it in the car (but not if you are driving please!) and know with some certainty what to expect.
