Travel from Lucca to Siena

Hello. My husband and I will be in Lucca in early May 2019. From Lucca we head to Siena. I *think* we want to rent a car to get from one town to the other, so we can see San Gimignano and either the Chianti region or maybe Volterra, or maybe both on the way. We could travel most of a day and arrive in Siena maybe around 5 or so. Is this a reasonable thing to do, time wise? I appreciate all of your advice and help. Thanks! Liz

Hi Liz,

We did exactly what you described a few years ago. We rented a car in Lucca in the morning, drove to Volterra, explored for a few hours, then drove to San Gim, explored and had lunch, then arrived in Siena in the late afternoon (where we spent a few days). We took secondary roads-it took us a little longer but it was a good choice for us to see more of the countryside. We found easy parking at both V & SG in paid lots just outside and very close to the historical centers; in Siena we parked in paid parking at the train station. We travelled in March, so nowhere was crowded. In May, it's probably still not as bad as high season (summer), but others can chime in about how busy it may be then. Your plan seems perfectly reasonable.

You need to know that driving rules in Italy are not the same as in the USA. In particular, visitors are not allowed to drive into the historic centre of almost every settlement. See driventoit.blogspot.com.au

Forgot to add after spending a few days in Siena we drove north through Chianti on our return to Lucca. Beautiful countryside, stopped at several small towns, delicious food & wine. It was an easy & enjoyable drive. So depending on how much time you have, you can easily visit Volterra, San Gim, Siena, and the Chianti region in an easy loop over and handful of days.

For the Lucca to Siena scenic route I'd suggest heading out on the SS439 towards Pontedera. Go through there staying on the SS439 for appox 27km, passing through La Sterza along the way, and you will come to a left turning signposted Firenze/San Gimignano (43km) /Volterra which is the direction you want to take. From Volterra take the SS68 to Colle di Val d'Elsa then on to Monteriggioni and then to Siena. We did this in reverse returning to Lucca from an overnight stay in Siena and it was a much more interesting route than the autostrada based one we took to get to Siena.

For parking in Volterra outside of the ZTL zone; follow the signs for Centro on Viale dei Ponti and you will arrive at the entrance to the underground car park, parcheggio la Dogana, on the right, just before you get to the Piazza Martiri della Liberta. It's very close to the centre.

We are doing the same trip except from Pienza to Lucca one way. Looking for a scenic route not on toll rds to get there. The route you have said from Lucca to Siena sounds good. ThKs

Julie J, you're welcome! Siena is the furthest south we have ever been in Italy in all the years of staying in Lucca.
