There is no need to book in advance. These are local (Regionale) trains that have no seat reservations and no advance purchase discounts. Buy in Lucca. Do not forget to validate the tickets before you get on the train by time-stamping them in a machine at the station.

Just to advise you there are two stations at Montecatini. For the town and the thermal baths and also for the funicular to Montecatini Alto you should get off at the first stop Montecatini Terme.

That's great. Is it far from the baths to the funicular railway?

Not far and it is well signposted. Probably ten to fifteen minute leisurely stroll slightly uphill.
