Itinerary for Day Trip to Cinque Terre?

We are spending 3 days in Lucca in March 2018 as part of a 10 day trip to Italy. We'll spend 5 days in Rome and 2 days in Florence. My wife is insistent on wanting to spend a day in Cinque Terre. We have 3 older kids, we don't mind hikes.

I've been researching this and can't seem to come up with a realistic itinerary with what trains to take, what CT towns to visit, where we'd hike, and where we'd take trains between the towns. Would someone mind laying what would be the best itinerary? What trains? What is the best things to see and do and give us time to get a train back to Lucca?

For trains, enter Lucca to any specific village in the Cinque Terre, e.g. Monterosso at the far end and Riomaggiore at the near end, on www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en

Use the same website for train times between villages.

It's approximately a 3-hr train ride from Florence to the Cinque Terre (and then, of course 3 hours return trip)....you are traveling in March and have kids...it's quite possible that it's still cold and rainy and the trails either muddy and/or closed. I would keep this trip in your pocket if weather seems good then decide that day but otherwise, you may wish to reconsider.

Oh sorry, of course...still consider the weather as the Cinque Terre is a warm(er) weather destination.

We will be in Lucca next fall and have 2 days trips planned to the Cinque Terre. Both days are 10 hours long each starting around 8am departure from Lucca. One day we will travel to Portovenere where we will catch the public boats that stops in all five villages. We will likely get off in 2 of the towns and then catch the boat to the next. Return back to Portovenere for our ride back to Lucca. The second day (a few days later) we will drive from Lucca to La Spezia and catch the train...getting off in Riomaggiore and hiking the trail to Manorola, then train to Vernazza to hike the trail between Vernazza and Monterosso...then train back to La Spezia for our ride back to Lucca. Our local tour guide helped us plan these two days.
