Churches in Taormina

Hi

I am looking for a map showing the various churches in Taormina which are available for weddings. Especially interested in any information or photos on Chiesa Del Varo and Madonna Del Rocca?

Lastly does anyone know if there is a church for wedding ceremonies in the grounds of the San Domenico Palace?

Thank you

This is one of the better maps posting some of Taormina’s churches.

You could also enter the names of the churches on a Google map.

Click on “Taormina The city’s history in its Churches” then “Taormina’s Churches”

Wonderful thank you. Please could I ask you if you know anything about the Chiesa del Varo - any photos of it? Where is it located and is there a little square outside it?

We are trying to decide on a church for a weddng. I know it is a personal opinion buy which church do you think has the nicest location?

Alternatively is it possible to have the ceremony outside like in the communal gardens ot down by the beach?

I look forward to your words of wisdom!

Thank you

Ciao Kitten100,

Chiesa del Varo is very Baroque and conveniently located in the town centre and “feels” more like a traditional church. The elegant and historic Chiesa del Varo is located in the medieval town at the top of a stairway leading up from the far end (Porta Catania) of Corso Umberto. It only has one nave and a bell tower and was first opened in the 15th century. A medieval crypt is linked to it.

The Chiesa del Varo is found on the The Valeria road (Corso Umberto I).

Madonna della Rocca has a spectacular location high above Taormina with stunning views of Taormina and the sea. Madonna della Rocca is carved into the mountain.

Here are some photos of Chiesa del Varo, as well as more photos of the Madonna della Rocca.

Even if you were to have a church service, you would still have to be married in a civil ceremony first.

Italian Law states that you must have two people to witness for you. You will need to have two witnesses sign the register for you. You will also need to pass their details to the town hall prior to the wedding and before you sign the certificate of intent a few days before your marriage.

Which style church appeals more?

And would you prefer to be in town or above town?

Chiesa del Varo is near Taormina’s Main Square, the lovely Piazza IX Aprile for photos.

I would just add a word of caution about getting married in Taormina. It is a beautiful place and there is definitely a real romance about it. But last time i was there, I counted SIX wedding parties along corso umberto on a Saturday night. In fact there was almost a queue to get photos taken in the main piazza. Personally if I were doing this I would go for Madonna della Rocca in that the views are absolutely amazing, it is a really unusual and intimate church (the rocky ceiling is fantastic) and you'll presumably have the place to yourself. It might take a bit more organisation in terms of travel but I'd say well worth it.

I hope your wedding goes well :)

There’s as much romance and beauty (or even more) about Madonna della Rocca – I have a very special place in my hear for Madonna della Rocca.

Madonna della Rocca is an intimate and very special church, and with its rocky ceiling, you never forget that this church is carved into the mountain.

There’s no piazza, but a small area in front, and to the side of the church for photos – Stairs begin here that go all the way down to Corso Umberto in Taormina.

For a lovely setting where locals dine and host special dinners, consider Al Saraceno – Located above Taormina near the Madonna Della Rocca, Al Saraceno has a lovely terrace with staggering views. There was a ‘Sicilian’ wedding party during my last visit.

Or you could still marry at Madonna della Rocca and hold a reception in Taormina – It would take more organisation in terms of travel, unless you were to stay at the lovely Villa Angela or the charming Villa Ducale – You could walk to both hotels from Madonna della Rocca and Al Saraceno.

Villa Angela:

Thank you Vagabona and Belfast Girl :) It's just difficult to make a decisin when you cannot visualise them, so thank you for your advice! The views from Madonna della Rocco do look amazing. As you say quite different from neat the Corso and good point Belfast Girl re other weddings!

We are planning La Giara for the recpeption - from their website it looks fabulous - I hope it is as nice in real life!

I dont suppose anyone has any photos of La Giara set up for a wedding?

Thanks again

Hi Kitten100,

You should really visit Taormina and see for yourself prior to your wedding. You would feel more comfortable and secure in your decisions, and it would make for a much more relaxed and enjoyable wedding day for you.

And here are photos of a wedding set up at La Giara – Scroll down to….

Breathtaking view from the terrace of " La Giara Restaurant "

And also….

Family group photos at the hill top Chiesa Madonna Della Rocca and at Chiesa Del Varo'...
