2 week trip in May 2019

We will be in Italy 2 weeks and the areas we want to visit in Sicily are Taormina, Sircusa, Mt Etna and perhaps another small town. Sicily for 5 nights. We then will head to Cosenza region of Calabria and Benevento region of Campania to look at the villages our families are from. We are planning only 2 days in each. Last destination area would be Amalfi Coast for a few days. We have been looking at flights and train options and trying to decide if flying in and out Rome is the best and most economical solution or flying into Calabria or Catania would make more sense. We can always add a day or two to the trip if needed. I realize this is all still in planning stages but any guidance from other experts would be appreciated. Thank you

Marylou,

I would fly into Catania and out of Naples or Rome. You will have to investigate what airport combo makes the most sense, and not just in dollars. Also consider travel time required between your arrival and departure airports and your destinations in the itinerary. Sometimes its worth paying more in airfare vs. time to get to an airport and transportation costs for same plus time lost on your trip.

You also really need to consider travel time required between these three different destinations on a two week trip. Is the travel time worth the time actuallu IN the destinations? Will there be time to actually do what you are going there for?

5 nights in Sicily will give you 4 full days. Figure a half day to get there, even if connecting through Rome or Naples. Half day to see Taormina, its small. Full day for an Etna excursion. 3-4 hours to move down to Siracusa and get to lodging. 3 nts Siracusa, definitely stay on the island of Ortigia. Depending on how much you want to see in Siracusa, you can easily spend 3 full days there, but you dont have three full days. You moght do an easy half day trip to Noto by train if you have a strong interest. Back to Messina for the ferry to Calabria, or what ever you are thinking from there......

Two weeks will go in a flash. Only you can decide it its worth it to do these three locations. Have you been to Italy before? If so you may understand the logistics. If not, I would recommend keeping this easy by skipping Sicily this time. It takes some time to get to and enjoy Sicily. Its easily a two to three week destination by itself. Even then you would wish you had longer!

Thank you for the info. We have been to Rome, Florence and Venice in a prior visit. Maybe we will skip the Almafi coast this visit and spend more time along the coast in Sicily. Still lots of planning to do and appreciate anyones suggestions.

Welcome to Sicily Marylou M!

You might regret so little time in your ancestral towns, and especially after the effort to arrive.

Optimal would be a single straight-through transatlantic (one itinerary) ticket to Sicily (Catania) with a return from Naples.

Since you've been to Rome, then consider more time in Sicily.
