where should we base ourselves???

We will be coming from Venice and would like to see the cinque terre, la spieza, lucca, pisa,...we're not sure if we need to stay at a hotel near the cinque terre and then another closer to lucca. If we just stay in lucca will we be traveling too far to get the cinque terre? Please help! Trying to make reservations. We will continue on to Rome after visiting this area. Thank you for your help!

I would treat Lucca and the Cinque Terre as separate places to stay. And for preference I wouldn't stay in La Spezia which is an ex naval port and to my mind not as appealing as one of the five towns, or alternatively somewhere like Levanto which is just past the Cinque Terre, still on the train line, but a bit bigger and maybe less touristed, though it is certainly a popular Italian family holiday town.

You would probably need just a few nights to see the coast here. The towns are very small.

If you have four days or less, We would stay at one intermediate point.

In another previous answer, we have mentioned the b&b Villa Ducci in Arcola and got positive comments.

Villa Ducci would be almost impossible as a base unless you have a car to get to it, and if you tried to use your car to visit le Cinque Terre, you would quickly run into the problem of where to park it.

Does it bother you to switch hotels or would you rather stay in one town and do day trips? Would you like to experience le Cinque Terre at night, when it is extremely quiet and has fewer tourists, or would you rather be someplace where there is more going on?

You can stay in either le Cinque Terre, Pisa or in Lucca and reach the others by train for a day trip. Pisa is the most central and has the most to do in town after dark But you should pick on the basis of what kind of experience you'd rather have at night.

If you don't mind a bit of a "road trip", you could spend some nights in le Cinque Terre and some in Pisa or Lucca.

Something you might consider, coming from Venice, is to take a train to Pisa, stow your heavy luggage in the train lockers, but continue on with a small backpack to le Cinque Terre (and now you aren't dragging your heavy luggage up to your b&b). Spend a couple of nights in le Cinque Terre, but leave early enough in the morning to go to Lucca, and then go to Pisa and see the sights. Either head to Rome right away, or spend the night in Pisa and start out the next morning.

If you like delicious seafood and vegetarian dishes, La Spezia has the best food of all the towns you've mentioned, and if you like a bit of action at night, it is a lively place because it is a university town and a port.

We recently based in Rapallo and took day trips to Pisa, Florence and Cinque Terre by train, very easy. Rapallo itself well worth the stay and highly recommend Hotel Vesuvio. No need for car and easy train coonections.

We are thinking of staying at Camping River camp site at Ameglia-Armezzon in our motorhome in the next day or so. Can anyone tell us how difficult it is to get to cinque terre by public transport.... they say public transport is at 1/2klm? not sure if this goes to La Spezia and then we catch a train to the first town on cinque terre. Also is there any town with restaurants within walking distance of the town? Looking forward to a reply. Bumper6
