Portovenere. A full day?

We have two days scheduled with our "home base" in La Spezia. We plan to devote one of the days to visiting Tellaro and Lerici. My question is about the best way to enjoy the other day. I want to spend at least a part of the day in Portovenere.

Which option would you recommend (or would you suggest something entirely different):

1. Visit Portovenere (a.m.) and La Spezia (p.m.) or vice-versa

2. Take boat or bus to Portovenere and spend the entire day there.

3. Take boat or bus to Portovenere and spend the morning, continue via boat to visit one or two towns in Cinque Terre.

Your decision is really a matter of personal preference Neurorad1, but you're probably considering the Golfo dei Poeti area because of what you've read about the Cinque Terre, and so #3 - Take boat or bus to Portovenere and spend the morning, continue via boat to visit one or two towns in Cinque Terre.

@vagabonda: Really we decided to stay in La Spezia (at the beginining of what is primarily a trip to Tuscany) so we could visit Portovere and Tellaro. We were in Santa Margherita Ligure for a week last year and never made it to CT, though we had a day set aside for it. By the time the day came we decided to spend it in SML, we we adored.

So then perhaps Portovenere and Tellaro are the top destinations for you to consider, and they are both beautiful.

If you decide on an entire day in Portovenere, you might consider a boat out to its islands.

Really the Golfo dei Poeti is so beautiful, and a wonderful spot to visit and enjoy.

Hi

Many years ago we did Vagabona's option 3. Had some time in Portovenere then went to the CT. We got a boat and visited a couple of villages and got the train back. It was a fantastic day trip and I remember it like it was yesterday, well, last week.

Portovenere is a beautiful town, and it's also beautiful to view by boat.

But once you've seen the castle, churches, and mediaeval section, you might find a full day a bit long if you don't intend to go to the islands.

The Cinque Terre towns are also very beautiful approaching by sea.

@vagabona: Decisions decisions.....I need to do a little research about the islands....hadn't even considered visiting them until you commented....

Just for discussion's sake, if you were going to try to only go to one or two, which CT towns would you go to?

Vernazza and Manarola are prettiest.
