2 wk trip, feasiblity of visting Falerna, Naples, Rome

Planning ahead for a family trip in early summer 2016 and wondering how feasible it would be to visit Rome for 5 days; 3 days in Bay of Naples with Sorrento base for touring Pompeii, Vesuvius and Herculaneum; remainder in Falerna .where my husband's ancestors hail from. Thoughts on practicality?

I know getting from Rome to Calabria is do-able but how is it done if departing from the Naples area? Anyone familiar with rentals and things to do in Falerna? (I checked the TA forum for that area but it's quite dead).

TIA for your help.
