Probably not, but you would very likely need it if you get stopped by the police or are in an accident. You would also need to carry your US drivers license with you, which is needed to get the international drivers license (actually international driving permit)..

An IDP is a legal requirement to drive in Italy. The rental companies may or may not ask to see it but it is stated on my Hertz and Budget contracts as a requirement. Europcar only *strongly* suggests it.

I was stopped in a routine document check by the police and that was the first thing they asked for. They told me it would be an immediate fine if I didn't have it along with my state driver's license.

For $15 why not have one?

Yeah, just get it, it is good for a year. It is a lot better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it and don't be misled by all those who say they never needed it.

I am with TAB. I too was stopped during a routine check by the Carabinieri and they wanted my IDP, passport and license along with the rental agreement. Better safe than sorry.

We just rented a car from Hertz a couple of weeks ago and they asked for my passport, IDP, regular driver's license, and credit card. They've asked to see my IDP the last 3 times we've been to Italy

Definitely. I hired a car in Italy last year and the year before, and was never asked for it.

However when I received the confirmation of my car hire back from Avis and Europecar for this years trip to Italy, it stated that an International Drivers Licence is required.

It only costs $AUD 50 and lasts a year....

PS: make sure you take a passport photo with you when you go to buy it.

Have a great trip !

The AAA will take photos for you for $10 (member) or $15 (nonmember) so you don't have to take photos with you. You can, of course, save money by bringing your own.

But in Australia, the NRMA will *not* take a photo for you, so you need to take one with you.
