Dive from Barcelona to La Rioja to Madrid

My husband and I have 4 days in Barcelona and 4 days in Madrid and were thinking of hiring a car and driving from barcelona to La Rioja and stay there for say 2 nights and explore the regions - wine tasting and walking and trying resturants, before driving to Madrid. Is this recommended? is it a nice drive from barcelona, and then to madrid? Are the wineries welcoming and can we sample wines there? All advice would be very welcome.

Wine tasting and driving is not recommend.

The website for the DO region is

http://es.riojawine.com/es/

Form that you can pick and choose which bodegas you wish to visit- Most charge to visit and most will have to be prebooked.

To plan your route between the tow locations use via Michelin

We enjoyed a very nice trip into the Rioja region, staying at the Hotel Villa de Abalos. See:

As mentioned above, pre-book the bodegas, which is easy to do, and just have a taste along the way. The driving can be a little challenging because you'll be off the main highways, of course, and winding through small towns and such. This is a great way to see Spain.

Laura:

You need reservations for the wineries in La Rioja.

A city where you can just walk in to the bodegas is Jerez de la Frontera. The Tio Pepe tour is terrific!

Another important wine region is Ribera del Duero and that is nearer Madrid (and just beyond Ribera del Duero you also have smaller D.O: Rueda and Toro).

You could drive Zaragoza, Soria, El Burgo de Osma to Peñafiel (excellent wine museum in the (very spectacular) castle.

Lots of bodegas on the Duero.

We visited the area at Easter last year, stopping off in Tarazona en route to Soria. Tarazona has a rich heritage of three cultures like Toledo (Christian, Muslim, Jewish)
