Traveling from Frankfurt or Munich airports to Stuttgard

My almost 17 year old daughter will be traveling with a friend to visit friends in Germany. The friend lives near Stuttgard, but I have found that airport to be hard to get to, so I was going to get them tickets at Frankfurt or Munich and have them ride the train to Stuttgard. Is this a reasonable thing for 2 fairly bright teenagers to do? Is it easy to get on the train and get to their destination? They know some German, but it’s limited. I have found many German people speak excellent English and are very helpful.

There are direct trains from either airport to Stuttgart. If you go into the website bahn.de you will be able to see prices and timetables. You can book the tickets online on that website, there are trains departing from both airports you mentioned. You just need to allow time to get through immigration and Customs before the train journey ( at least 2 hours) or else the girls can buy their own train tickets on the day, There are ticket machines at nearly all stations and you can select language, very easy to do.

The online Saver fare is train specific but the savings can be substantial.

sorry, no direct train from Munich airport, they would catch an S-bahn (suburban) as far as Munich main station then change to the train for Stuttgart. But there are direct trains from Frankfurt airport.

The Frankfurt Airport has direct trains to Stuttgart and takes about 70 minutes. From Munich, you have to take an S-bahn into the city from the airport before transferring to another train. Of course, they could just fly Delta to Stuttgart from Atlanta. You can also fly to many other major airports in Europe and there transfer to Stuttgart.

Yes regarding the Saver fares. Do a dummy booking for your dates and see what comes up. e.g. in May I see fares from E60 down to E29. But these increase in price as the time goes on so booking well in advance gets the best prices. You will be offered seat reservation which I do take but not essential. It costs about E5 extra to reserve.

What are you talking about? Stuttgart airport is not "hard to get to"? It can be easily reached by S-Bahn. Yes, it takes a while. But taking the train from Frankfurt will take much longer than that.

So, the only reason to fly to Frankfurt would be a significant price difference. If the price is about the same, get her a ticket to Stuttgart.

And forget Munich. It takes at least 45 minutes to reach the city center from the airport, by ANY means of transportation. So the only reason to fly to Munich is if you want to go to Munich. Which is of course not a bad idea, as it is a beautiful city. But since your daughter wants to go to Stuttgart, it is not what she'd need.

P.S. If you meant that it's not easy to book a flight to Stuttgart, then book one to Frankfurt. But there is one problem with the saver fares on www.bahn.com - if you miss the train (e.g. because the flight is delayed), you lose the ticket.

There are two ways around this:

1. See if your airline offers "Rail & Fly". This is an affordable train ticket that is not bound to a specific departure time. You can take any train on the day of your flight or on the next day.

2. Book a hotel for the first night in Frankfurt, then book a saver fare ticket for the next day.

Standard advice for people arriving at a German airport: Check whether the airline offers "Rail&Fly" tickets. These are flexible railway tickets from the arrival airport to anywhere in Germany, usually priced around 30 Euros. A lot of airlines offer them, though not all airline call center agents know that. The ticket might have to be added before finalizing the booking, depending on the airline.

I am sure the OP meant Stuttgart is hard to get to from the States.

Changing planes in Europe on the way to Stuttgart is no problem. If it is outside the Schengen area, like London, you simply stay airside in the transit area. If it is in Schengen, like Frankfurt or Amsterdam, immigration will be at that airport (only) and customs for your checked baggage at the final destination. To my knowledge you do not even have to go through security again if you arrive from the States or an EU country.
