Fuessen to Zurich with SwissPass

Hi,

We are traveling from Munich to Fuessen to stay before heading on to Zurich. What would be the best option for travel?

We are thinking the "Day Ticket for Bavaria" to get from Munich to Fuessen. Could we then get another day ticket to get from Fuessen to the Switzerland border where the Swiss Travel Pass would kick in? What is my best(and hopefully) cheapest option. We would prefer to stay on the train as we are traveling with our 2 girls ages 1 and 3.

So, just to confirm... you are going to Füssen, staying overnight, and then continuing to Switzerland?

The Bavarian day ticket (Bayern-Ticket) will work for the first part of the journey, as long as you stick to the restrictions (like: depart after 9 am on weekdays). For the second part of the journey it will depend on the route you take, and the type of train you travel on. From what I can see at www.bahn.de there are several possible routes between Füssen and Zürich, most of which either involve fast trains (on which the Bayern-Ticket is not valid), or cross through the neighbouring state of Baden-Württemberg or through Austria.

However, no matter what route you take you will NOT be required to leave the train at the border (which seems to be your main worry) - you will always be able to buy a ticket to the first station in Switzerland, and stay on the train.

Thank you so much for the response. You are correct, we are staying the night in Füssen.

I was hoping that I could book a cheaper fair to a border city where the Swiss Pass would take over for the rest of the journey to Zurich. Does that make sense or should I just book the tickets for Füssen to Zurich and not worry about the Swiss Pass part of it?

Bavaria has no land border with Switzerland. Between Lindau and St.Margrethen there is a piece of Austria (Bregenz).

Cheapest might be well to buy discounted specials from Füssen to Zürich.

The connections with the least changes departs at 11:05 (also 06:00 and 15:05 and 17:05). A regional train to Buchloe and a direct EC train to Zürich from there. The EC train is however not covered by a Bayern Ticket.

Generally it is however possible to travel to Lindau using regional trains on a Bayern Ticket. EUR 28 for 2 adults (as your kids are under 6 years they won't need any tickets at all. In all 3 countries.)

Lindau to St. Margrethen

a) EUR 8,00 per adult if you buy from DB online or from a ticket machine or counter in Füssen.

b) EUR 5,50 per adult if you buy from the ÖBB / VVV ticket machine at Lindau Hbf

The trip from St. Margrethen to Zürich will be covered by your Swiss Pass.

Amazing information. Thank you very much. I was worried there for a little bit about being able to make the trip easily but you both have been a huge help! Thanks again!

It's a long trip to Zurich by train, as you know. Füssen as a starting point makes your trip longer. You're looking at 6 hours on the train to Zuich, right? If you must go to Füssen first, then (after your overcrowded 30-minute tour of Neschwanstein) it might be worth spending an hour on the train that same day and returning to Buchloe for the night - if you can find accommodations there, the 7:58 EC train from Buchloe goes DIRECTLY to Zurich in under 4 hours. (Note that if you're using the Bayern ticket for Munich - Füssen, you pay nothing additional to continue on to Buchloe the same day.)
