How to spend 2 - 3 days in Munich

We are planning to extend a river cruise vacation by adding a few days in Munich. We disembark in Regensberg and plan to take the train to Munich, so we would have that afternoon, another full day and then probably depart sometime on the third day (but could add one more if necessary!). Looking for suggestions on the best and perhaps off the beaten path things to do during our time there. Of course we want to take in some beer gardens and would like to visit Dachau, but what else? Any specific beer gardens we should visit?

You could take the train to Herrsching and walk (or bus) up to Kloster Andechs ...its a nice hike up....it has great views and the biergarten beer/food is wonderful. When you come back down you can stop at Biergarten Seehof overlooking the Ammersee. We go every time we are in Munich.

I'd highly recommend to spend a day in Regensburg! It has one of the most well-preserved medieval oldtowns in Germany. You could still travel on to Munich in the evening, takes about 1.5 hours by train. Or the next morning.

For things to do in Munich: Pick the sights that fit your interest the best. The official tourism websites are a good place to start your research - https://www.muenchen.de/int/en/tourism.html / https://www.munich.travel/en

And not that I mean to discourage anyone to study the darkest years of German history, but with the little time you have I'd say: Don't go to Dachau! The visit will confront you with the worst atrocities imaginable. It is an emotionally challenging, a sobering experience. You need time to take it all in at the site - and more time thereafter to contemplate what you have seen. You may rather want to use your time for more enjoyable - or “fun” - activities.

Reg beer gardens: imho those at Englischer Garten are a must, either the one at the Chinese Tower or at Kleinhesseloher Lake. And many consider Augustiner Munich's best beer. The brewery's largest beer garden is Augustiner Keller, not far from the main train station (Hauptbahnhof).

Another nice beergarden is at Victualienmarkt. You can first go around all the stalls with fruits and vegetables from all around the world, then buy your snacks for "Brotzeit" or lunch and have a seat.

Me also would not recommend on going to Dachau. You really could ruin your holiday with that appalling experience.

"We" as in more than 1 but not more than 5? You need to study this for the train tickets. One way Regensberg-Munich in 2nd class is a few cents under €30, with this ticket 1 person travels for €25 and up to 4 others can be added to the same ticket for €8 each (you buy ONE ticket for the size of the group). Also valid on local public trransport in Munich to reach your hotel - and then out again later the same day. There is a 9AM threshold on working days but I'm guessing you won't travel that early.

I agree with # 2 and 3 about Dachau time wise .We went once ... it is a lot to take in. If you want to do a nice walk on trails along the Isar river ..check out Menterschwaige and then walk to Waldwirtschaft (WA-Wi).Both are nice for food /beer....beautiful surroundings.

Dachau seems to be a bit of an American thing to do but it's not worth it for your limited time. I would also recommend Viktualienmarkt for a mix of food beer and a lovely market. It's also just round corner from Marienplatz and also St Peter's Church which you can climb and get the great views of Munich. Also suggest Schloss Nymphenburg a lovely palace/ house and super gardens plus you have the largest beer garden, Hirschgarten, a 5 minute walk away.

You have omitted several key statements of information. What time of year are you going? Who is going? All adults or are children with you?

This will greatly help with recommendations. Thank you.

We love walking tours and we enjoyed the Third Reich walking tour. The walking tours all seem to start at Marianplatz. The bike tour is also enjoyable. You can cover a lot more on bikes. Munich is very bike friendly.

So, great suggestions above. I would also recommend a walking tour. We did this one and it was excellent.

An another alternative would be a bike tour.

This company get good reviews.

Or you could just rent some bikes and cycle round the English Gardens, it is a great way to see the park, it is really too big to see on foot.
