Most beautiful village day trip from Menton?

We plan on doing a day trip today or tomorrow to a very beautiful village closeby (within one hour drive's). Can anybody recommend one? Or should we just catch the train to Monaco? Thanks.

Sainte Agnes is a very good suggestion, Sospel is also well worth a visit, but bear in mind that May 1st is a public holiday and most shops, restaurants etc. are likely to be closed...

Here's some info about the perched villages that are close to Menton (you can visit several of them in one day) :

I personally have a soft spot for La Brigue which is further up the Roya/Bevera valleys but can still be reached in approximately one hour :

Beautiful village and remarkable "Notre Dame des Fontaines" chapel a couple of miles north of the village (entirely covered in frescoes by 15th Century local artists). Need to check opening hours though as it's not always open.

Can you get a local bus from Menton to any of the villages mentioned? Is the bus service fairly regular?

St Agnes, three a day, click bus ten on www.carfenbus.fr/lignes-et-horaires.html For Sospel http://www.sospel.fr/index.php?id=165

For la Brigue, go by train to Ventimiglia ter-sncf.com/Images/Paca/Tridion/FH04-Mandel… then by Italian train from Ventimiglia to la Brigue http://trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html

Thanks perilizia. We chose Menton to be close to Italy. Is it easy enough to visit Italy using public transport from Menton both by bus and train. Not sure yet how deep I want to go in to Italy though. Would Genoa be too ambitious on a day trip?

Easy to get to Ventimiglia by train, see the timetable at ter-sncf.com/Images/Paca/Tridion/FH04-Mandel…

From Ventimiglia, there are trains all along the coast to Genoa and further http://trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html - Genoa is possible as a day trip, but it would be a very long day as it's two hours each way from Ventimiglia plus the connection time to Menton.

There are also buses from Ventimiglia station inland to beautiful villages like Dolceacqu and Apricale, see bus Linea 7 on rivieratrasporti.it/OrarioInvernale2009-2010… - and also much more frequent buses along the coast (Line 2). Buy tickets in the station bar,

It is more difficult to cross the border by bus from Menton. Take a local bus 1 or 3 www.carfenbus.fr/lignes-et-horaires.html towards Garavan, and get off at the nearest bus stop to the Pont St Louis border crossing (this is the upper of the two, a little above the sea). Walk across the border, a couple of hundred yards or less, then get the Italian local bus (Linea 1 in the Riviera Trasporti timetables) from what has now become Ponte San Luigi as you're in Italy. This is probably only really useful if you are going to visit the beautiful Giardini Hanbury in Mortola.

Thanks again. This is the local information that I was looking for. It is nice to take the train but I find sitting on a local bus meandering through the countryside as good as an organised tour but at little cost.
