Dublin to New Ross

Will be travelling from Dublin to New Ross in a hire car. What is the best tourist / scenic way to go, via the east coast or inland? Will be visting the Dunbrody's ship and probably stay somewhere local before heading off next day to Blarney via Cork? Inland was looking at Rock of Cashel but am open to suggestions.

Thanks

Bob

Dublin, Kilkenny,Waterford is probably the best road, motorway a lot of the way, you could break the journey with stops in Carlow, Kilkenny or Waterford city.Let us know which stopping place you'd choose and you'll get lots of stop suggestions.

There seems a number of ways to get to New Ross and travelling the best road is not a high priority. More interested in things to see on the way. We have the day to travel from Dublin, as long as we have time to visit the Dunbrody's Ship.

Near to the motorway from Dublin-Carlow-Kilkenny-Waterford:

Kildare, The National stud and the Curragh-if you are there early monring you will see the racehorses being worked on the gallops.

Moone and Castledermot High crosses.(I have a kind of high cross obsession,we adapted one of the panel pictures from Moone for our wedding invitations!!).

Plenty threads on Kilkenny city here.

Waterford, the new "House of crystal", Reginald's tower.

After a bit of researching on the net using your info as a guide I have come up with the following.

Leave Dublin hopefully around 9am after picking up hire car.

1st stop Castledermot to look at the High Crosses.

Next stop Kilkenny, hopefully to do a tour of Smithwick's Brewery (1st tour 1230)

Next Waterford depending on time as we want to do the Dunbrody's ship tour no later than 4pm.

If you think this might be a bit tight we will drive through Waterford next morning on way to Cork / Blarney

That could be a bit tight - you might be better off travelling on the R700 from Kilkenny to New Ross directly and waiting until the following day to visit Waterford. The traffic coming from Waterford to New Ross can be very busy in the evenings. En route you will pass through Thomastown and Inistioge, always worth a visit!

Meant to ask, what is the condition of the R700.

Its fine, its not a motorway but it will get you to New Ross in about 30 mins. I travel on it everyday. If you go to http://www.bing.com/maps and do your route search its comes up. When leaving Kilkenny's ring road, you can take the exit for Bennettsbridge/Thomastown/Inistioge/New Ross (R700) instead of the N9 for Waterford. You can actually view the road by using Google streetview

If you are going to visit the High crosses in Castledermot, come off the motorway at Crookstown and see Moone high cross too!
