What are fun things for a 12-year-old to do near Dublin?

Our family will be staying in the Dublin area the first week of April. It's our first visit to Ireland and our son's first trip overseas. What activities, events, atttractions, etc. are within driving distance of Dublin that are "must-see"/"must-do" and would be fun for a 12-year-old?

Depends on interests and if you will be depending on public transport.

Can use public transport but also plan to have a car. Interests include concerts, places of historical significance, castles, seaside towns, unique shopping, experiencing Ireland's ambience (culture, cuisine, people ...)

The Viking splash tour is cheesy but fun

http://www.vikingsplash.ie/

Headquarters of our national games -Croke Park stadium is well worth a visit and he can try his hand at some of the skills of hurling and gaelic football,as well as visit the on-site sport shop that sells items specific to the sports and to each county crokepark.ie/GAA-Museum/…Stadium-Tours.aspx

Kilmainham jail is full of history and appeals to this age group usually

Trim castle is worth a visit too, but a distance from the city.

Hello. I agree with Harvey about Trim castle. Parts of the movie Braveheart were filmed there: the interior of Edinburg and also the walls were the town of York. If your son has not seen the movie you could make it a family thing to do before going. Hope this helps, and enjoy.

Head out to Glasthule. Get an ice cream from Teddys. Then amble along the sea front then down to Sandycove. This is a small beach. But if you walk along the road beside the beach and up the incline you will come to the James Joyce Tower and of course the Forty Foot (where as kids we used to perve at the men swimming naked but now they usually wear their clothes!!). It used to be a men only swimming area but is now mixed.

My children enjoyed these three places in Dublin:

Entrance is free here, and there are a few touch screens scattered throughout the museum. We spent more than two hours looking around:

and then we walked to Dublinia, which was a fun place:

we walked across to Christchurch Cathedral afterwards. I think the best part for the children was stepping down into the immense crypt where we saw the mummified cat and rat which were found in one of the organ pipes! You can purchase a combined ticket for Dublinia and Cathedral.

Second Trim Castle: another family favourite. Note that you have to join a tour to look around the Keep, but they're fairly regular.

Highly recommend visiting Newgrange if you're interested in history; I'm taking my children back this Spring for a 2nd visit:

Not sure if this would count as a 'must see or do' but there's a pottery place in Portmarnock (bit of a journey out, could get the 32a bus from Lower Abbey Street) www.artworkscafe.ie. They give pottery lessons and (I think) you can paint your own pottery plus there's a nice hotel just down the road called 'The Golf Links'. You're 12 year old might be a bit old for this but there's a place in Temple Bar called 'The Ark' (Cultural Centre for Children) www.ark.ie and you could check if there's anything on. There's also a 'Sea Safari' of Dublin bay www.seasafari.ie or www.xtreme.ie/events/sea-safari-in-ireland/, a couple of tours of Dublin by sea. Dublin Ghost Bus www.dublinsightseeing.ie/index.aspx

Hope this helps!!!

My kids really enjoyed a visit to wicklow goal which is in wicklow town. We also went to an evening dog racing in Mullingar last year and they had lots of fun. It is suprisingly a night that is family friendly with a nice athmosphere. We are not gambellers but were at a loose end one night and saw it advertised in our hotel. We would def go again.
