Swimming in the sea

Hello

I've had some great answers about the best beaches around Dublin. Now my girlfriend has announced she would love to swim in the sea (I won't be joining her as my swimming is the worst in the world!). Of the good beaches around Dublin are there any that are best for sea swimming.

Thanks

Certainly on the north side of the city, Portmarnock (the Velvet Strand) is probably your best bet for swimming.

The small Tower Beach at Portrane is also good (and it's quite sheltered).

There are lifeguards on all of the beaches in June, July and August and there's generally no problem getting into the sea at most of the beaches (as always, check to see if there are any warning flags flying). However, we find that the water can be quite shallow at the main beach in Portrane (the Brook beach) as well as Donabate and Rush beaches and while it's ideal for kids who want a dip, adults may find the have to walk out a bit to get a decent water depth for a proper swim.

It's also likely to be a little cold (the Med it aint!) but it's certainly refreshing...... You might chance a paddle if you don't fancy the whole immersion thing.

On the Southside, Killiney, Seapoint & the 40 Foot are three of the more popular spots for swimming in the sea.
