Best restaurants in Dublin, Kilkenny, and Sligo

I'm looking for some good restaurants to eat at as I am going on a nine day tour of Ireland in a few days. Price is not a huge concern, though I certainly don't want to spend too much. I am interested in traditional Irish food (corned beef, Irish stew, shepherd's pie, etc.) as well as steak (I heard they have very good meat) and possibly contemporary. I figure I will eat at a bar or two, so those are places where I will get some traditional food, but I wanted to go to some restaurants as well (unless there is a particular pub that has good food). I don't have a whole lot of time to explore, so I just want a few can't miss locations in each place. The only recommendations I have received thus far are The Winding Stair and the Boxty House in Dublin. Thanks for any help.

There lots of restaurant and other food recommendations in the Top Questions about Dublin section on the Dublin Forum. Just click on the 'where can I eat in Dublin' question and you'll find them.

There aren't a lot of restaurants in Dublin specialising in 'traditional Irish food' (the Winding Stair is about the best). The dishes you mentioned are everyday fare for a lot of Irish people so you'll find the in pubs and fairly ordinary restaurants and cafes. Shepherd's pie is an English rather than an Irish dish but it is popular here.

Here's a current thread on the Dublin Forum about traditional food.

Also, you'll find steak on the menu in most restaurants.

On the more expensive side, and ones you would definitely have to book ahead (a month or so) for are Shanahans On The Green - Amazing steak. and Marco Pierre White - Sublime food.

In Kilkenny my favourites are Cafe Sol and Zuni. Both have an excellent early bird menu and also do lunch. The late evening menu also is not too pricey.

In Dublin I would go to the Trocadero and for traditional food Old Mother Hubbards facing ChrisChurch Cathedral and ONeills pub on Suffock Street and for fish and chips Leo Burdocks.

Campagne in Kilkenny is not to be missed www.campagne.ie. Cooking style is French but they use great local Irish Produce.

Winding Stair has already been mentioned, although imo it's gone too expensive for the simple fare on offer. Also in Dublin check out The Pig's Ear on Nassau Street and Gruel on Dame Street.

We don't do pub food particularly well in Dublin ( compared to London for example) and I wouldn't hurry to receommend any city centre pubs. If you're after fish & chips, I reckon you'll be better off going to Leo Burdocks otherwise you'll get better quality food for about the same price in the likes of Gruel.

There are some greal deals to be had in some of the high end restaurants at the moment- especially at lunchtime. If you want a great example of the very best in contemporary Irish cooking try Thorntons at the Fitzwillian Hotel for lunch. Two courses for €25 is absolute bargain.

Alternatively try One Pico off Molesworth Street. €19.95 for two courses at lunchtime. Another good example of contemporary Irish cooking.
