Best way to get from Dublin airport to city centre??

Hi,

This has probably been asked a dozen times already but here goes.

I have booked through Ryan air to come to Dublin for the day on the 16th October with my daughter. We arrive early morning and leave in the evening. For the bargain price of 4p , including taxes etc i just had to book it, even if i will be exhausted at the end of it all.

I have never been to Dublin before although i know many people who have so i am looking forward to it.

What is the best way to get from the airport to the city centre where all the shops, restaurants are?? is it easy to jump on the bus and if so what number would we need, or am i better off getting a taxi?? What about going back, we would need to be back at the airport for around 7ish.

Thanks

Hi , Here is a link for the aircoach . It goes into the city centre and ideal for a very comfortable ride .Its €7 one way and € 14 return .This is because you could travel on to Cork or belfast for that price !

http://aircoach.ie/

Yo could also take a Dublin bus link 16 a goes right into O Connell Street , city centre . Fare € 1.60

Here is a link to those public bus routes /

As mentioned above Aircoach is a good choice (7 euro per trip) but there are also two express buses 747 and 748 (5 euro)

I would go for the express bus, frequent, both stop on O'connell street and you get a better view ;-)

Oh and unless you arrive late at night dont go for taxi, it wil bleed you dry - and even if it is late Aircoach service is 24/7. Not that frequent at night but it beats paying a cabbie 30 euro.

Enjoy your stay

I've just come back from my penny flight, but i stayed for 2 nights.

We just got the air-bus which runs every 15 mins. Come out of the airport, cross over the road, and hey presto there you are.

it took us 20 mins at 8.00am to get to trinity colledge.

And returning we got the bus on the other side of the road and it took 30 mins to the airport, more traffic on the road.

it cost us 6 euros each.

And i paid 24 euros so i knew that i'd paid for my return, just don't loose your ticket.

Thanks for all your replies. I think i will definately avoid getting a taxi.

I must admit i am a little nervous, i have flown on my own before but this time i have my daughter to worry about as well. I have visions of missing flights due to my lack of knowledge of where i am going.

Is getting the bus back to the airport as straight forward as getting to the city centre?? if i got the 747 or 748 does that take you to a bus station where i can get it from on the way back??

Just out of interest lenny9 how bad was it getting through security at Dublin airport?? i have heard from people who have nearly missed flights due to the chaos. Our flight back is at 21.15 so what time would it be best to arrive at the airport? we have not gone for the priority check in as we were advised that the check in queues on a Tuesday were not that bad.

Yes, if you take 747 or 748 returning to the airport is as simple as gettign to town. I am not sure where do you want to go in town, if you would liek to share the info I could give you a bit more detailed info but in general a central location is O'Connell street where all of the busses from the airport stop.

Returning to the airport from city centre is simple because all of your buses stop in pretty much the same place (50m apart maybe)

Right next to the Spire in front of the Dublin Bus HQ you have Aircoach, 747 and 748.

If you need to be at the airport for 7am I would say you can get the Aircoach to avoide the hussle, express busses start the service sometime in the am and Aircoach is a 24/7 service with busees every 30 minutes or so in early morning hours.

Maybe you should go with Aircoach after all - if you purchase a return ticket straight away (from the driver) it is 12 euro per person, yo usave a bit of money - dont have to worry about timing on the way back AND Aircoach announces all the stops in the city centre so even if you dont know where you are you will hear the message that the next stop is O'connell street etc...

Hope this helps a bit

Forgot to add one thing you asked for: if your flight is at 21:15 I would recommend being at the airport for 7pm. Dublin airport is hard to predict, sometimes it is fairly all right and sometimes it is packed really bad. If you have soem spare time you can always enjoy a pint before going back home ;-)

If you are coming with your daughter you can buy a family rambler ticket for €8.50 .This will cover you AND your daughter for all day Dublin bus services. You can use this on the 747 and 748 expressway services into town which normally cost €6 each way!

Good value as it works out as €4.25 each for return trip on this bus. Just validate your ticket on bus and no worries for the rest of the day! You can buy the ticket at newsagents in arrivals. Don't get the local Dublin bus services into town as your time is precious and they end up stopping all along the route.

As you are arriving early it may be closed. If so, there is a vending machine outside arrivals door beside departure point for buses. Buy your ticket here. The first 747 into town departs at 7.15 so if you manage to get this you should be in town for 8a.m. It stops on O'Connell St. Bus Driver will probably announce but ask him just in case . Get off here don't stay on until the bus station. Off course as somebody else said Aircoach is closer for Grafton St.

The main high street Henry Street is just opposite the Spire on G.P.O side. It has the usual hight street shops with the local Dublin store Arnotts a must visit and the brand spanking new Dunnes stores :-)

Grafton st on the other side of the river is more upmarket with similar hight street stores but the stores are much smaller then Henry St except for Brown Thomas . There are some nice specialist shops off Grafton st.The two shopping areas are pretty compact and easy to walk around.

I would advise you to have a look at a city plan of Dublin and print one off before you arrive.

I don't think you will have a problem finding your way around. But I'm sure you will hate having to leave for the airport.

Enjoy :-!

Thanks for all the info.

We arrive in Dublin at 9.25 am so i think i will but one of them rambler ticklets from the newsagents and get either the 747 or 748 into town. I think the first thing we will be doing is grabbing some breakfast.

As it's such a short visit we have mainly come to look round the shops, have lunch, more shopping and then back to the airport. I am sure we will have a great day though even if it is just for a few hours.

Can't wait to come now.Only 95 days to go (god that seems so far off)!!

I highly recommend that for a short trip you do a circuit of the hop on hop off bus tour. It will bring you to all the main sites and give you an insight into the city and some of its history and you can get out and visit a few places that interest you.

Dublin Bus do a good hop on hop off tour, they run every 10 mins or so
