Family Adventure for 30

We are planning a family gathering on Aug 9- 19 for 25-30 people. I find that any vacation rentals that would fit a group that size are already booked up for our 10 days. I am thinking it would be good for people to go their own way during the day and come together in the evening for family. I am looking for

1. Suggestions of where to stay

2. How do we get around?

3. How to divide our time for the best experience? Currently I am thinking 4 days in Dublin and 4 days in Cork area. Suggestions for such a large group?.

Stay away from Dublin at that time. It will be very busy with the Horse Show. And accommodation in Dublin is very expensive anyhow.

Your dates fall at absolute peak time so you need to start looking outside the box and booking soon.

Please don't book lots of accommodations with the intention of cancelling most of them later. Make your decisions and stick with them.

There a couple of new hotels opening in Dublin this year. You will pay upwards of €180 per night for a room. However at this stage you might be able to negotiate for your large group and even get them all together under the same roof.

Might be best to do as BoxtheFox says and try negotiate a group price, or else maybe try a travel agent that could do a group tour type deal and get deals on flights and accommodation etc?

Thank you for your suggestion. It looks like a great place. They do not have enough rooms available for that time frame. I am looking at a different time frame to see if it works for our family. I did not realize that August would be so busy.

In Dublin, pretty much every weekend in August and Sunday 1st September 2019

will feature sporting events involving large attendances and pressure on accommodation, travel, restaurants and pubs -

as part of the the closing stages of The All-Ireland Hurling and (Gaelic) Football Championships in Croke Park, in Dublin.

The All-Ireland Finals will be on Sunday 18th August, 2019 and Sunday 1st September, 2019 - the two busiest.

Other reasons why and when your dates matter - still a work in progress:

How you travel will depend to some extent on where you will be based.

If you wanted to look at public transport - train, coach or bus - check out this topic for the basics:

With as many as 30 people, you might find a private bus and driver would make most sense.

Some of the Trip Reports in the last link above include travel with a private driver, including a couple with details of costs and so forth.

Apologies: just seeing your requirement that people in your group be able to go their separate ways during the day, with which I concur wholeheartedly.

The only options for that are to rent separate vehicles;

or stay in a base location from where people can take a selection of organized (or, do-it-yourself) Day Trips;

or, those with similar interests rent a local driver - taxi, hackney or minibus, depending on size of group.

About five years ago, friends with a similar-sized family group to yours stayed at McCarthy's Lodge in the centre of Westport, Co Mayo:

They reserved all the accommodation and the owners facilitated their various requirements for a group with ages ranging from 8 to 80.

Each family segment rented their own cars, as they flew in from different places in Europe and the US.

Thank you for your awesome response. I happen to be a McCarthy so the idea of staying at a McCarthy Lodge really appeals to me. I have sent off a message to see about help and accommodations. Thank you so much. If you have other ideas, please post.

I thought The Cottages at Bettystown, County Meath (relatively close to Dublin) might be another option for your group but most of them are already booked during your August 2019 dates:

https:/…

Another option, if available, is in Beaufort, County Kerry and the magic number of 30 is mentioned:

http://beaufortireland.com/rates.htm

Friends of the family from Michigan stayed there a few years ago. There were at least 26 of them.

The place is rented - like most high-season rentals - from Saturday to Saturday.

In your case, that would mean from Saturday 10th August, 2019 to Saturday 17th August, 2019.

One way or another, you need to start thinking about booking your accommodation fairly soon.

This is a company that might have a cluster of adjacent neighboring properties in some of their locations:
