Where to stay?

Hi..we're a mature couple self driving down from NI. We have 4 nights booked around Kildare so that we can cover Wexford and Waterford etc....but then hope to move on for a couple of nights so that we can take in Cork, Kinsale, Cobh and anywhere else. (saving on time wasted driving)

Any recommendations on particular areas to stay? Not asking for hotel names as we will source these ourselves. More like, is there any particular area that would be good for a base...?

We are mainly sightseers, throw in some shopping and photography opportunities and nice places to eat

Are you sure you mean Kildare? Seems a bizarre base for Waterford and Wexford.

Have a night there to break the journey, but the move on to Waterford, you can then continue along the coast to Cork.

Yes, Kildare....well Athy to be precise...just intending using it as a base driving out each day and back..it's only just over an hour to each. But Cork was looking more like 2.5/3 hrs each way...which would be too much driving not enough enjoyment.

Because you have your own transport I recommend that when you are in Cork you should stay in the Sailing/Fishing town of Kinsale if you would like to explore more of West Cork OR the harbour town of Cobh, if you want to visit more of East Cork.

I recommend Cork city as a great base to anyone who does not have their own transport.

There are quite a few accommodation options in Kinsale, not as many in Cobh. If you want to run your accommodation choice by us before you book, do that.

There is quite a debate about which is better, Kinsale or Cobh. I know which is mine!!!

Cobh is a lot more rustic than Kinsale and is my preferred town between the two but both are excellent options.

I'd still recommend staying in central Cork city. You can easily visit both towns from there.

Recommend staying in kinsake close enough to cork and yet west cork within easy reach. Clonakilty, inchadoney beach, Rosscarberry , Glandore all lovely spots within daily reach from kinsale.

Thanks for all that. We've rejigged our plans, now two nights in Athy, two in Kinsale and one more on the way home....That gives more scope to reach Clonakilty and beyond... possibly Gantry bay or the like. Going to include Limerick on the way home too. Great advice, many thanks 😀
