No Re opening of the Hospitality Industry BEFORE Mid-Summer

The Taoiseach (Prime Minister) has said this morning on Radio na Gaeltachta that there will not be any reopening of the hospitality industry BEFORE mid-Summer.

Its a very difficult situation for anyone working in this industry, and I feel very sorry for them.

But it will also influence plans being made by some posters here

I'm fully expecting to cancel my September break and try and get my deposit back that I paid September 2019.

I moved it over but it is after mid Summer but I'm highly doubtful

Tarry, hold out! And keep on hoping! If we lose hope we might as well give up altogether.

Just like Bean (post on Corona thread) we haven't booked anything, we'd be off to Donegal within the week or so in "normal times" (can't really remember what "normal" is). At this stage we can't plan for anything. And yet planning would be so helpful in giving us some kind of perspective, something to look forward to.

At this stage I would be delirious at the prospect of the 5 km restriction being lifted to allow travel within your own county...

It is sad to see this as it means that lots of sport (children and adult sport) will likely be put on hold until then. The Government made a major error over Christmas by assuming that the hospitality industry and its customers would be responsible. Alcohol sale and responsible behaviour never went hand in hand in Ireland and they never will. Drive around any town or village in Ireland over the Christmas and you see punters out smoking cigarettes before they go back in for their next feed of pints. Publicans and hotels all over the country deliberately flouted the rules and I have no sympathy for them. The travel restrictions were eased to allow people to see their families but hotels used this as a green light to open up and were openly telling people in NI that it was perfectly fine to cross the border and stay in a hotel for a few nights. They had their chance to behave responsibly but they reverted back to form. All that token wiping down of bars and distancing was just for show when the RTE cameras arrived.

It's a fine line for a traveler from outside Ireland in planning a trip. On one hand we want to visit and add to the economic recovery and on the other we don't want to be any sort of burden on the people who live in Ireland.

My wife and I are fully vaccinated but that doesn't mean that we can't shed the virus to people who haven't been. Science shows that vaccinated people shed the virus in very small and weak amounts but still...

We'll be back as soon as it's safe and welcome.

I really wish they would make one overall announcement instead of making different announcements on different interviews like has been happening the last few days.

PaulKris, you hit the nail on the head.

If you are vaccinated, you are only protecting yourself. Not others. The reason everything is closed is to protect those of us living here. I was told today by someone, somewhat in the know, that they hope to have anyone who wants a vaccination, vaccinated by the end of September this year. Which is good news.

On the downside, three cases of the Brazilian variant have been detected here in the last few days as well.

Its like a rollercoaster. I don't like rollercoasters.

paulkris, your sense of responsibility is to be applauded. I wish all prospective visitors were thinking like you. .Many of them do, unfortunately many don't. And that includes Irish people. Whacky excuses for going abroad at this time: "I have a dental appointment in Tenerife", "I need to go to Lithuania for Botox treatment"...

Hopefully we'll be able to welcome you back soon-ish. Maybe next year?
