2 week itinerary

Hi,

We're excited about our first trip to Ireland. We will be arriving in Dublin early on Sept. 16 after a transatlantic flight. I have a few questions about how best to spend the middle of our trip. I realize that exploring the south and north are not recommended on the various forums, but we really want to see Belfast and the Giant's Causeway. We are an active couple who enjoy hiking and nature, but also enjoy cities and getting to know the local culture/people. Here is our itinerary:

Sept. 16 Arrive in Dublin

Sept. 17 Free day in Dublin

Sept 18 pick up rental car and drive to Cahir spending the night there

Sept 19-21 Killarney

Sept 21-22 Tralee (wanting to do Dingle peninsula, but end up a little north, explore a town we can walk in, and is a little busier for a Saturday night, is this a good option?)

Sept. 22-24 Cliffs of Moher/The Burren (thinking of staying in Ballyvaughan or Kinvarra)

Sept. 24-26 Explore Connemarra (not sure if we should stay in Galway or closer to the park, maybe Clifden on the 24 and Galway the 25?)

Sept 26 Drive to Belfast

Sept 27 Giant's Causeway

Sept 28 Explore Belfast, drive back to Dublin and return rental car

Sept 29 Return flight leaving at 1400

I'm wondering if maybe we should just spend the 1 night in Kinvarra area, 2 nights Clifden, and 1 night Galway? Would this make more sense?

Any insight you may have would be appreciated. Thank you!

The only reason we sometimes recommend not doing both North and South would be because of lack of time, and avoiding what I call the 'whistlestop' tour (which some visitors like but I believe that most don't). You do need about 14 days to do both north and south some justice, and that's what you have. And now, to your proposed itinerary

Sept. 16 Arrive in Dublin

@@@@ Yes fine. If you arrive early you can get yourself settled in by doing some gentle strolls or maybe use the HOHO to get the lay of the land

Sept. 17 Free day in Dublin

@@@@ So much to see in Dublin and you don't have a lot of time so make a wishlist, prioritise it and don't be upset if you don't get to it all. Less is more in Ireland.

Sept 18 pick up rental car and drive to Cahir spending the night there

@@@@ Why an Overnight? No need

Sept 19-21 Killarney

@@@@ PERFECT. Loads to see in Killarney.

Sept 21-22 Tralee (wanting to do Dingle peninsula, but end up a little north, explore a town we can walk in, and is a little busier for a Saturday night, is this a good option?)

@@@@ Don't understand what you mean here, but Dingle is a very busy town on a Saturday night. Explain further.

Sept. 22-24 Cliffs of Moher/The Burren (thinking of staying in Ballyvaughan or Kinvarra)

@@@@ Lovely. I really liked Ballyvaughan, but any of the known villages in that area are lovely. Ballyvaughan is small but is bigger than Kinvara. Most days, Shane Connolly does a guided hike of the Burren starting at 10am from Ballyvaughan. it is fascinating. Takes 4 hours, is not strenuous but you do need to like walking and nature.

Sept. 24-26 Explore Connemarra (not sure if we should stay in Galway or closer to the park, maybe Clifden on the 24 and Galway the 25?)

@@@@ Definitely Clifden. Galway is a nice compact city, but Clifden is the perfect basecamp for beautiful Connemara

Sept 26 Drive to Belfast

@@@@ Yes this is doable. Use Google maps to get your driving distances and timings. It is very accurate, and remember that those timings do not include stopping times, so factor those into your journe

Sept 27 Giant's Causeway

@@@@ Yes, the north Antrim Coast is beautiful

Sept 28 Explore Belfast, drive back to Dublin and return rental car

@@@@ Yes, doable.

Sept 29 Return flight leaving at 1400

All looks good to me except reconsider overnighting in Cahir. You can still stop there and visit the castle and then continue to Kerry

I'm wondering if maybe we should just spend the 1 night in Kinvarra area, 2 nights Clifden, and 1 night Galway? Would this make more sense?

Dingle would be a better option for a Saturday night than Tralee.

Also you are double listing days makes it appear that you have more time than you really do, but overall it is not too bad.

Burren Peaks Walking Festival 22 September 2018 - 23 September 2018.

Kinvarra is a place I could easily hang my hat & stay quite awhile.

Just another option to consider -

Head straight to Belfast on arrival from Dublin airport - plenty of coaches and times.

Tour Belfast - take a tour to the Giants Causeway etc

Return by coach to Dublin airport - pick up your rental car and off to explore.

Save your Dublin days for the end of your visit and return your car when you get back to Dublin.

Thank you all for your feedback! We will be spending the night in Cahir because we wanted to stop at Kilkenny Castle, Kells Priory, Rock of Cashel, and Cahir Castle on the way. It will be a busy day and we didn't want the pressure of making it all the way to Killarney. We're also planning on stopping at Blarney Castle on the way to Killarney the following day.

Thank you Kesh_grammy for letting me know about the Burren Peaks Walking Festival. We'll definitely have to check it out, that was quite serendipitous!

Our trip is still a ways away, but I'm glad to hear we're on the right track! Thanks again!

Kilkenny Castle, Kells Priory, Rock of Cashel and Cahir Castle in one day -- starting from Dublin --is likely to be long and VERY Rushed.

Routed most efficiently (Kells Priory BEFORE Kilkenny Castle) : https://goo.gl/maps/yKwUGRnJzkp

Maps shows 239 Kilometers -- which realistically translates to around 4 or 4 1/2 hours of DRIVE time. If you allow AT LEAST 1 hour for each stop (and some are worth longer), plus an hour for a meal break, the day is looking like 9 -10 hours from starting the car in Dublin, to parking it, in Cahir.

I know, that's why we figured if we stayed in Cahir we could always do some of those sights the next day :)

If you’re planning on doing some of that the next day then you’re eating into your one and only Killarney day??

I honestly think you need to give Kerry the time it deserves. I would stay in Killarney until the 22nd, using it as a base to see Dingle also.
