Western Shore Destination

Four of us will be spending 9 days visiting Ireland from the United States. After a couple of days in Dublin, we plan to rent a car and drive toward Galway. We plan to stay for the next 4 or 5 days in that area, exploring the west coast. I am not sure I want to stay in Galway, as I normally prefer the quaint, cozy smaller towns. Can someone please recommend some smaller, cozy towns with a good selection of inns or historic hotels that will give us the feel of staying in the Irish country side, instead of the experience being in just another big city. And...if I am wrong about Galway, let me know.

Thank you to those who take the time to answer, I really appreciate it.

Well, it depends on what you want to see in the area. Are you wanting to spend your time in Connemara region? If so then Clifden. Are you wanting to spend time in county Clare? Then I would say Ennis.

You won't find some "smaller, cozy towns with a good selection of inns or historic hotels that will give us the feel of staying in the Irish country side" Only the cities will have a wide selection of such hotels. You would do well to find one or two places in a medium sized town. But quality would triumph over quantity for me and if you give us an idea of your nightly budget, we might be able to suggest a few places.

You could consider Westport - it’s a small, very pretty town, lots of choice of accommodation, bars, restaurants, craft shops. Fabulous scenery in the surrounding area, including the islands ( Achill, Inishbofin, Inishturk, Clare Island) and the Ballycroy and Connemara National Parks. The beaches in South Mayo are spectacular.

But the other posters’ suggestions of Ennis and Clifden are also lovely.

Would it be too much to say I would like to do both? I am thinking of a day trip to the Connemara region. Another day trip to county Clare. Maybe I should think of Galway as a good base for these day trips. It is certainly centrally located to what I read to be some beautiful drives.

125 to 200 Euro per night would seem reasonable. Somewhere safe. Quiet so we can rest for the next day of adventure.

Suggest that you research Irish B & Bs for your visit

Galway doesn't feel like a big city and it has lots of choice, so if you are amenable, go for it!

maybe do consider Clifden, or Roundstone.....both are small but Roundstone is very small....also try B&Bs over hotels because they are wonderful and you get the treat of interaction with the owners....not to mention a fantastic breakfast is included in the price which will be less than €100 per night....also, not a ton of traffic to deal with......
