Look for a cheap advance rail ticket to Glasgow with Avanti West Coast or Kyle of Lochalsh via Inverness with LNER.

Then Scottish Citylink coach from Glasgow or Kyle or Inverness to Portree..

Other than coach to be cheaper it’s a bicycle or walking. Otherwise you can get a train to Kyle of Lochalsh or Mallaig (both on the mainland) see www.nationalrail.co.uk

Yes, coach is generally the cheapest way to travel long distances. If, like me, you don't like the idea of a long coach journey then you will have to accept that you won't get the cheapest journey.

You can't avoid a bus or coach completely, though, because trains don't go to Skye. All you can do is to shorten your time by getting as close to the island as you can.

Yes that would work if you can find a reasonable fare with BA or Easyjet.

You could also look at the cost of hiring the car from Glasgow.

London Euston to Mallaig, £133

London Kings Cross to Kyle of Lochalsh, £196.

Those are Single Train Fares.

You still have to get onto Skye.

Or you could fly to Inverness and hire a car there.

I know this isn't what you are asking, but if it's for this year, do you already have accommodation booked on Skye? If not it might be as well to see if you can find somewhere ( cheap) and secure it first!
