We're staying 3 nights in Oban next July. We're looking for recommendations for things to do, ideas please.
In the town itself you can walk up to the folly overlooking the town or visit the distillery. Don't miss the seafood stall near the ferry terminal :-)
Will you have a car? That makes a difference. I'd recommend a day southwards to Kilmartin Glen, Knapdale, or round the corner to Inveraray. Or you could arrive via the A85, and then leave by that southern route?
There are also back roads further north. There are ferries from Tobermory to Kilchoan, or Fishnish to Lochaline, giving you access to Ardnamurchan and Morvern. Those areas are bounded on the north by the Fort William - Mallaig road. There's also the Corran Ferry from the FW - Glencoe road over to Morvern. Castles, nice scenery, small communities, some decent food.Edited: 13 November 2018, 20:35
We did that tour as we didn't have a car.
Cruachan Power Station at Loch Awe has a minibus driving into the mountain to see the generators.
Ganavan Sands is a beach a couple of miles outside the town past the Alexandra Hotel.
To the south I recommend a drive over the Atlantic Bridge to Seil Island and down to Easdale.
Post no. 8 - Have you ever been to Oban when the sun is shining? It's a fantastic little scenic west coast town with friendly locals and it's ferry terminal feeds most of the islands. Then again I'm biased as we have a holiday home up there.
