driving from London to Holyhead in December

Hello travellers,

My family and I will be hiring a car at Heathrow to drive to Holyhead to catch the ferry to Ireland in December. We hope to make the drive in one day, stay the night in a B&B in Holyhead and then catch the ferry the next morning. Can anyone suggest the best route from Heathrow to Holyhead and an approximate length of travel time. We are from Australia and have never driven in winter conditions like the UK experience so we want to of course take this into account when choosing the route we take as safety is of course the priority. Thank you

I'm having trouble understand why one would rent a car to drive across England and Wales, then ferry across the Irish Sea in winter, when it would be so much simpler and quicker to fly to Dublin and rent the car there.

If you must do the drive/ferry, I think you should be more worried about ferry cancellations due to rough seas.

The journey planner at www.theaa.com will give you drive times.

You want to spend 24 hours in a plane, jump into a car and drive for over 5 hours, get a ferry - which means paying for the car AND out of UK insurance, do so in December when there's a maximum of 8 hours daylight when the weather could be really nasty and either pay a massive one way hire fee or do the same coming back rather than wait for a few hours at an airport and get a flight to Dublin.

Dont do it! My daughter is a very experienced driver and was supposed to comehome last December (she lives in Ireland) she gave up after 15 miles and went back. You might not get the very bad weather she had, but it is possible and not worth it, there is not much daylight that time of year and it will just be miserable. Fly to Dublin.

There is a good train service from London to the Holyhead ferry. Take the ferry as a foot passenger. You can buy combined ferry/train tickets - have been able to for more than 100 years!

4hrs 53 mns

M4/M25/M40/M6/M56

Use Google maps..input London Heathrow airport and Holyhead ferry Terminal

That will give you a rough idea.....

Mainly motorway so timings will be fairly accurate subject to traffic holdups/accidents and/or time of day (avoid rush hours arounnd London & Birmingham).

Not a pretty drive.......

Here's what you should do

1) See if you can add flights to Dublin from Heathrow to your existing ticket - if you can then you won't see your luggage until Dublin and you can use the Flight Connections Centre

2) If you can't then book onward flights for Dublin from Heathrow for about 4 hours after your scheduled arrival time at Heathrow. At check-in in Oz see if you can get your luggage checked through to Dublin. If you can then use the Flight Connections Centre, if you can't then collect your luggage and recheck it.

Net result, you'll be in Dublin before you would have reached Holyhead.

ronw - what did you end up doing?

We are flying to Heathrow (from Canada) in mid June. On arrival we were going to Liverpool - same day, thinking that we could catch the ferry over to Dublin. Unfortunately, it's Holyhead we want. Another few hours on the train! After googling for options on how to get there, we've decided to drive. It will give us time flexibility - don't have to go by the train schedule and June hopefully means better weather (than Dec).

Please factor in the POSSIBILITY of ferry cancellations and delays due to windy weather

The Irish Sea is responsive to wind conditions

Even in June there can be strong enough winds to cause disruption to schedules.

deedee8 can you fly into Manchester. MCR its that much closer to Liverpool /Holyhead

Or fly to Dublin from Manchester with Ryanair

why would you fly into London if you want to go to Ireland? Its a long slog of a drive, mostly motorway, not many hire companies will let you take the car abroad, and the ferry will cost you £250 minimum. Its just not sensible.
