Where to go for a beach holiday with young children ?

Have never visited Wales and would love advice on what area would be the best to visit with beautiful beaches , great walks ,good pubs and not too touristy. Aiming to visit in August . Any particular villages or small coastal towns that could be recommend would be much appreciated.

Pembrokeshire.

I particularly like the area around St.Davids, or Newport in North Pembs, but you could equally try Saundersfoot, or Freshwater East. Hard to go wrong, really. Have a browse here

I also love the Pembrokeshire area.

Also, take a look at Gower, Caswell Bay, Langland Bay,

Would choose two areas of Pembs as above,St Davids/Solva area, or Tenby/Saundersfoot area, however, it is the height of the tourist season, so finding somewhere not too touristy is very difficult if not impossible

Or head to north Wales and stop in Criccieth.

It has two beaches and a ruined castle.

Close by is the Ffestiniog Railway and the Welsh Highland railway. Both are narrow gauge steam railways taking you through magnificent scenery. If you decide on the Ffestiniog Railway, break journey at Tan-y-Bwlch which has an excellent cafe and children's play area. There is a lovely walk down through the trees to the lake you can see from the railway.

Spend a day exploring Porthmeirion used to film the 1960s cult TV programme, The Prisoner.

Aberdaron at the end of the peninsula has a good beach and some excellent walking at the tip of the peninsula. Follow the road to the disused coastguard lookout, park and walk.

Over on the other side of the peninsula, drive to Morfa Nefyn and at low tide walk along the beach to Ty Coch and Porth Dinllaen with its life boat station.

rent chalet at oxwich leisure park, oxwich bay, gower.

also try limeslade, rotherslade, caswell, langland for chalets and apartments next to beach and coastal path.

port eynon and rhossilli are quite big beaches as well.

rent apartment in swansea marina with beach, promenade, leisure centre, museums, etc on doorstep.

try some of these for ideas/advice :-

As you mention August I would avoid south Pembrokeshire which will be busy and head to up to the bottom end of Cardigan bay. Aberporth, Tresaith. Llangrannog.

Newport, Pembs is never too busy, even at that time of year, and has a nice beach plus an estuary to potter along, some lovely shops and restaurants.

North Wales: Criccieth is great - there are rock pools as well as paddling which is unusual, and you will find crabs under stones!. Harlech Beach is a dream beach - golden sands. Dinas Dinlle near Caernarvon is a very nice clean rural sandy beach with limited facilities. None of them get impossibly busy. In fact Harlech is often absurdly quiet. There is not much in the amusements line at any of these places - it is all about the beach, paddling, sand castles and ice cream.. You have to go to Llandudno for the dodgems etc.

Have a look ath the Good Beach Gide for cleanliness/blue flag status, but I have had no trouble at these three places with my children, every year for 15 years. The exception can be following very heavy rain, if drains overflow, but this is the case all round Wales, I think.

My son and his young family love Saundersfoot and rent an apartment right on the beach, the children love it!

Pembrokeshire will be overrun in August so head for Ceredigion - especially Aberporth - we had 25 years of holidays there and still going strong with my kids now loving the sand and rockpools away from the crowds. Two lovely beaches and village just large enough to have amenities without feeling too big. Best of luck
