travelling to york from heathrow

Would like to travel my way to York after having arrived at Heathrow, but, not on same day as itwould be an entire day journey. Thinking of stopping for two overnights at a scenic/historic town or village on way to York. Will be using public transportation i.e.bus, coach, train. Anyone have suggestion where to overnight?

The rail route from London to York is scenic in places, but the towns en route aren't particularly exciting (with due respect to the inhabitants of Peterborough, Doncaster etc.)

If you can stray from the direct route somewhat, Cambridge is the obvious choice. Maybe also Lincoln, although rail connections aren't brilliant.

Not sure as to why you think Heathrow to York would be a full day as trains from Kings Cross to York can in some cases do the journey in well under 2 hours (most are just over 2 hours) and the tube runs direct from Heathrow to Kings Cross in about 1 hour. As others have said, there aren't really any fascinating stops on the way between Kings Cross and York - perhaps Grantham might be the most scenic place to visit

The obvious would be to stop in London before proceeding to York. If you don't want to be in London then head for Cambridge which is only an hour by train from London King's Cross. You can get from Cambridge to York by train, changing at Peterborough.

Another option is to go to Oxford for your two nights, which is really the minimum needed for the city!

Direct trains from York (or more frequent ones with a simple change at Birmingham), then RailAir coach to Heathrow. No need to go into London.
