If your flight arrives at 0900 and the next departs at 1500 then the free time you'll have for sightseeing with be less than six hours.

What is your destination from LHR? Will your bags be checked through or will you have to deal with them? If bags will be checked, then from wheels down to the Undergroundn station on arrival the time needed might be 45 - 60 minutes. You'll need to be back at LHR no later than 90 minutes before scheduled departure time, depending on your destination, with travel time to and from central London anywhere from 40 - 65 minutes, again depending on your start point in the city.

Buckingham Palace will be closed to visitors in November, so you'd have a chance to look at a large building and say yes, that's certainly BuckPal. Piccadilly Circus is interesting for a few minutes, but much more iconic are the views at Parliament Square and perhaps even of the Tower and Tower bridge; London Bridge is a rather basic concrete structure.

One day off peak Travelcards for zones 1 - 6 cost £7.50 for adults and £2 for children. With them you may travel from and to the airport and use the Underground or a bus or two in central London.

But if you have to be back at Heathrow by 1330 at the latest and leave T5 (are you flying with BA the whole way?) then you might have to find something with which to amuse yourself at that terminal building. Alternately, consider a taxi to Windsor for an early lunch there and a quick look around.

Is that six hours from touchdown to take off? If so then you really won't have time to do more than go into London, say hello to a couple of things and come back out again even if your bags are checked through. You need to allow an hour for customs and immigration and another two hours in total for the journey into central London and back by tube plus you should be back at the airport two hours before your departure, maybe more if you need to check-in and are heading back to North America. Plus it's a Monday morning so traffic will be dreadful meaning that you really won't see any more with a taxi. Sorry...

And it's Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus and (probably) Tower Bridge.
